Chapter 3 - BREAKFAST OF BROKEN DREAMSThe morning sun cast a golden hue over the manicured lawns of our affluent suburban neighborhood. At 7:15 AM, I sat at the kitchen island, sipping a cup of black coffee from Grandmother’s chipped porcelain mug.

The front door swung open with a loud click, and heavy footsteps echoed down the foyer.
"Evelyn! Why hasn't the trash been taken out yet?" My father's booming voice bounced off the walls. He walked into the kitchen wearing an expensive tailored suit, briefcase in hand, followed closely by Claire, who was holding a tablet and scrolling through real estate listings.
They stopped dead in their tracks.
I didn't turn around immediately. I took a slow sip of my coffee, savoring the bitter warmth.
"What are you still doing here?" Arthur demanded, his face flushing a mottled red. "I told you to clear out last night. The photographer and the listing agent are arriving in forty-five minutes. Take your garbage and get out."
"Good morning, Father," I said calmly, finally turning to face them. I spun the wooden music box around on the counter. "I was just admiring my inheritance."
Claire rolled her eyes, letting out a sharp, theatrical sigh. "Oh, for goodness sake, Evelyn. Are we really going to throw a tantrum over a wooden trinket? Grow up. You've always been the jealous type because Vanessa and I actually know how to dress, socialize, and move in proper circles."
"She's pathetic, Arthur," Vanessa muttered, walking in behind them wearing oversized designer sunglasses indoors. "Hey, did you leave my Dior sunglasses in the guest bathroom? If they get scratched, I'm billing you."
Before I could answer, a sharp, authoritative knock hammered against the front door. Three heavy thuds that vibrated through the floorboards.
Arthur frowned, checking his gold Rolex. "That must be the real estate agent early. Claire, go let him in."
"I'll get it," I said, standing up smoothly from the stool.
"Sit down, Evelyn! Don't embarrass us in front of—" Arthur barked.
I ignored him, walking past the family and pulling the front door wide open.
It wasn't the real estate agent.
Standing on the porch were four federal agents in dark tactical windbreakers, flanked by local police officers. At the front stood Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcus Vance, holding a sheaf of heavy legal documents bound with red ribbons.
Arthur pushed past me, his expression shifting from furious to bewildered charm. "Ah, hello! There must be some mistake. We are listing this property today, so if you're code inspectors—"

Marcus didn't smile. He raised a single piece of paper.
"Arthur Sterling? Claire Sterling?" Marcus's voice cut through the morning air like a razor. "You are under federal arrest for wire fraud, identity theft, interstate transportation of stolen funds, and elder financial exploitation."
