Little Elena Brooks marched straight across the Persian rug, ignored her older brother’s playful wave, and waddled directly over to Natalie, grabbing the hem of her trousers just like Lucas had done years ago.
“Up,” the toddler demanded, raising her little arms.
Natalie knelt down instantly, scooping the little girl into her arms and pressing a kiss to her forehead.
Daniel stood up from his desk, walked across the room, and wrapped his arms around both of them, pulling his wife and daughter into a tight, unbreakable embrace. Lucas scrambled up from the rug and joined the hug, burying his face in his father’s jacket with a happy sigh.
The house was no longer a fortress of fear, secrets, and broken glass. It was filled with warmth, laughter, and love so deep it could weather any storm.
