Chapter 3 - Blood on the Marble“Code Red. Perimeter breach at the north gate. Multiple intruders.”

The voice over the intercom rattled through the hallways like gunfire.
Daniel Brooks transformed instantly. The vulnerable father vanished beneath the surface, replaced by the apex predator who controlled half the shipping ports and financial networks on the eastern seaboard. His eyes hardened into shards of ice, and his hand instinctively slid beneath his tailored jacket, resting on the grip of a suppressed firearm.
“Stay here,” Daniel ordered Natalie, his tone absolute.
He turned sharply to head toward the command center, but a tiny, desperate motion stopped him. Lucas, still huddled by the window, reached out a trembling hand and caught the hem of Daniel’s trousers.
“Dad... don’t go,” the boy whimpered, his face stained with tears.
Daniel froze. For a fraction of a second, the internal war between the ruthless mob boss and the grieving father tore him apart. If he stayed, he risked his son's safety. If he left, he risked leaving him unprotected.
“I have to, buddy,” Daniel said, his voice uncharacteristically gentle as he knelt down to pry Lucas’s fingers loose. “I’ll be right back. I promise.”
“They always come back with blood,” Lucas whispered, his eyes wide with a horrific memory.
Before Daniel could answer, the heavy double doors at the front of the mansion exploded inward. Splintered wood and reinforced glass showered across the polished marble.
Three masked men in tactical gear swarmed the foyer, automatic weapons raised.
“Down on the ground! Nobody move!” the lead intruder barked, his voice distorted through a tactical comms unit.
Natalie didn’t hesitate. With a fluidity that defied her slight build, she lunged sideways, grabbing Lucas by the waist and pulling him behind the thick stone pillar supporting the grand staircase just as the first round of gunfire chewed into the wall where the boy had been sitting a second prior.
Clang! Bullets ricocheted off the marble, sending sparks and stone dust flying.
Daniel didn’t drop to cover; he moved like lightning. Drawing his weapon, he fired twice through the haze of smoke. The lead intruder dropped instantly, his body crashing hard onto the floor.
The remaining two gunmen scrambled for cover behind the large velvet sofas in the formal receiving parlor, laying down a furious suppressing fire.
“You stepped into the wrong house,” Daniel snarled, advancing step by calculated step, blood dripping from a graze on his shoulder where a bullet had clipped him.
Natalie pressed Lucas tightly against her chest, shielding his ears from the deafening roar of automatic gunfire. Her heart pounded, but her mind remained ice-cold. Through the gap in the stone pillars, she noticed something chilling: the intruders weren't shouting demands for money or territory. They weren't looking at the safe or the art collection.

Their eyes were fixed entirely on the staircase leading to the upper residential wing.
They weren't here for Daniel's money. They were here for Lucas.
