Chapter 12 - Shadows of the PastThe rain outside the Brooks estate lashed against the reinforced windowpanes with a relentless fury, mimicking the storm brewing inside Daniel Brooks's mind.

It had been nearly three years since Julian and Evelyn were locked away, and the legitimate logistics empire Daniel had built was thriving. Yet, peace in the underworld is a fragile thing—built on quicksand and kept alive by paranoia.
In his private study on the third floor, Daniel stood before a mahogany table littered with cryptic faxes and encrypted messages. His phone buzzed violently against the wood.
He picked it up on the first ring.
“Speak,” Daniel commanded, his voice cold and flat.
“Mr. Brooks,” a nervous voice crackled through the secure line—one of his trusted European contacts. “We have a problem. The federal judge who presided over Julian’s trial... she was found dead in her car this morning. And the digital archives containing the original ledger copies have just been wiped clean by an unknown external ping.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened. A cold dread settled deep in his stomach. “Who has the capability to bypass federal firewalls within minutes?”
“Only one group,” the voice replied gravely. “The Vanguard Syndicate. And word on the street is... they’re looking for a surviving heir. Someone carrying the Brooks bloodline.”

Daniel dropped the phone back onto the cradle. His eyes darted toward the heavy oak door leading to the hallway. Downstairs, Natalie was reading a bedtime story to little Elena, while Lucas was upstairs finishing his homework.
The monsters they thought they had buried forever weren't gone. They were crawling back out of the dark, and this time, they were targeting the children.
