CHAPTER 3 — The Photograph That Should Never Have Existed

Cole stared at the faded picture.

Rain tapped softly against the apartment window.

His breathing slowed.

Impossible.

The man smiling beside a much younger Nora...

Was Michael Vega.

One of Cole's most loyal friends.

The only man who had ever taken a bullet meant for him.

Michael had disappeared during a warehouse explosion fifteen years earlier.

No body had ever been recovered.

Everyone assumed he died.

Including Cole.

"You knew Michael?" Nora asked quietly.

Cole couldn't answer.

Sophia looked between them.

"You knew Daddy?"

Cole finally whispered,

"He saved my life."

Nora closed her eyes.

"I wondered if you'd recognize him."

She disappeared into the bedroom and returned carrying an old metal box.

Inside were letters.

Cassette tapes.

Photographs.

One unopened envelope.

Across the front...

Michael's handwriting.

Only give this to Cole Hargrove if I never come home.

Cole's hands trembled.

For the first time since anyone could remember.

Inside was a single letter.

Cole...

If you're reading this, they didn't kill me because of money.

They killed me because I found someone inside our own organization selling children through our shipping routes.

I couldn't tell you.

I didn't know who to trust.

If I disappeared...

Protect Nora.

Protect Sophia.

And don't let the traitor inherit what we built.

Cole read every line twice.

Then three times.

One sentence froze his blood.

The traitor sits closest to your chair.

Only five people had ever sat close enough to that chair.

Four were already dead.

One was still alive.

Victor Kane.

His oldest adviser.

His closest friend.

The man who had stood beside him for twenty years.

The man who had comforted Cole after Michael disappeared.

The man who had secretly built his own empire beneath Cole's nose.

Cole slowly folded the letter.

His face became expressionless.

Danny immediately recognized it.

That look meant war.

Not against another family.

Against betrayal.

Cole stood.

"I've spent fifteen years hunting enemies..."

"...while eating dinner with the real one."

Nora grabbed his arm.

"Promise me something."

"What?"

"When you end this..."

"Don't become the man Michael died trying to save."

Cole looked toward little Sophia.

She had fallen asleep beneath a blanket...

Warm for the first winter in years.

He finally nodded.

"I promise."

Three nights later...

Victor Kane walked into the weekly leadership meeting smiling.

He believed he controlled every man in the room.

He never noticed the empty chair waiting at the end of the table.

Until Cole quietly pushed Michael's letter across the polished wood.

Victor's smile disappeared.

The room fell silent.

And before anyone spoke a single word...

Every guard in the building aimed their weapons...

At Victor.

The greatest betrayal in Cole Hargrove's empire had finally come home.

May you like

And this time...

There would be nowhere left to hide.
