CHAPTER 6 — The House Full of Hope

The address Victor revealed led investigators to an abandoned children's recreation center that had been closed for years.
What they found there changed everything.
Hidden beneath false walls were records.
Boxes of names.
Photographs.
Letters.
Evidence linking dozens of disappearances across multiple states.
Most importantly...
There were clues that allowed authorities to reunite several missing children with their families.
When the operation finally ended weeks later, headlines filled every newspaper.
The mysterious criminal network had collapsed.
Corrupt businessmen were arrested.
Officials resigned.
Families received long-awaited answers.
Cole never appeared in a single photograph.
That was exactly how he wanted it.
One cold December afternoon, he returned to Apartment 3C carrying two familiar cardboard boxes.
Nora opened the door and smiled.
"You still brought them."
Cole nodded.
"I thought you might want them."
Sophia ran over laughing.
"We don't need them anymore!"
She pointed proudly toward the warm apartment.
Real insulation.
Fresh paint.
New windows.
A real home.
Cole looked at the old cardboard wall Nora had decided to keep.
Only one small section remained.
Covered with Sophia's drawings.
"Why didn't you throw it away?" he asked.
Nora smiled softly.
"Because it reminds us."
"That even the weakest things..."
"...can protect someone you love."
Cole carefully touched one of the flattened boxes.
For years he had believed strength came from power.
From money.
From fear.
But those empty boxes had taught him something no enemy ever could.
Sometimes the strongest walls...
...are built by love.
Sophia suddenly hugged his leg.
"Will you come back for Christmas?"
Cole looked down, surprised.
No one had invited him anywhere in years.
He smiled.
A real smile.
"If your mom says it's okay."
Nora nodded.
"You've already been part of this family longer than you realize."
Snow began falling outside the window.
The first peaceful snow Cole Hargrove had ever truly noticed.

And for the first time since losing Michael...
He no longer felt completely alone.
