CHAPTER 5 — The Vault That Opened Only for Her

Nobody fired.

Not yet.

Both sides understood the truth.

If I died...

Whatever secret Sofia had hidden might disappear forever.

Marco lowered his rifle.

"Lucia."

"I don't blame you."

"You've been lied to your entire life."

He sounded almost gentle.

"Come with me."

"I'll tell you who murdered your mother."

The words hit harder than bullets.

I turned toward Vincenzo.

"You said she disappeared."

"I never said she died."

"Because I don't know."

Marco smiled.

"He does know."

"He just can't admit who pulled the trigger."

The accusation froze everyone.

For one impossible second...

Even Vincenzo looked uncertain.

Then Salvatore slammed his cane against the floor.

"Liar."

"You killed your own brother."

Marco laughed.

"No."

"My brother destroyed himself."

"The moment he chose love over power."

Suddenly...

The music box began playing by itself.

The melody filled the underground chamber.

Soft.

Beautiful.

Haunting.

The hidden room shook.

A second wall opened.

Behind it...

A steel vault.

No keypad.

No lock.

Only an antique phonograph with a brass horn.

Beside it...

One sentence engraved into the metal.

Only her voice remembers.

Everyone stared at me.

Salvatore whispered,

"Sofia built this."

Vincenzo looked into my eyes.

"Sing."

I closed my eyes.

The melody came naturally now.

Every note clearer than before.

As the final line echoed through the chamber...

The vault unlocked.

A hiss of escaping air filled the room.

Inside rested one single object.

Not gold.

Not diamonds.

Not cash.

A black cassette tape.

Labeled only:

THE CONFESSION.

Marco's smile disappeared.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

"No."

"Destroy it!"

Gunfire exploded.

The chapel erupted into chaos.

Bullets tore through stone.

Candles shattered.

Smoke filled the room.

Vincenzo tackled me behind the altar.

"Run!"

"But the tape—"

"I'll die before they touch it."

Marco's men rushed forward.

One reached the vault.

Then stopped.

He looked down.

A thin red laser crossed his chest.

Then another.

Then another.

Twenty sniper dots.

All aimed from above.

A voice echoed through hidden speakers.

Cold.

Female.

Perfectly calm.

"Anyone who touches my daughter's inheritance..."

"...dies."

The room froze.

I recognized the voice before anyone else did.

Because I had heard it once before.

Every night.

As a child.

Singing me to sleep.

May you like

"My mother..."

She was alive.
