CHAPTER 6 — The Woman Everyone Buried

No one moved.

Even Marco stared at the ceiling.

Impossible.

He had watched Sofia disappear twenty-four years ago.

He had built an empire on her absence.

Now...

Her voice had returned.

The hidden speakers clicked again.

"Lucia."

"If you're hearing this..."

"...it means I failed to come back for you."

Tears blurred my vision.

Every word sounded exactly as I remembered.

The lullabies.

The warmth.

The voice I had believed belonged to my grandmother.

"I never abandoned you."

"I hid you."

"Because your father trusted the wrong brother."

Marco slowly backed away.

His confidence vanished.

Salvatore whispered,

"She knew."

"She knew everything."

The recording continued.

"Inside the cassette is evidence proving who ordered the massacre that created the Russo war."

"It wasn't our enemies."

"It was family."

Silence.

Then...

One final sentence.

"If Marco Russo is still alive..."

"...do not let him escape."

Marco roared.

"Kill them all!"

The firefight exploded.

Stone pillars collapsed.

Dust swallowed the chapel.

Vincenzo grabbed my hand.

"We leave."

"What about the tape?"

"You already carry something far more valuable."

"What?"

He looked directly at me.

"You."

"They've spent twenty-four years searching for a recording."

"They never realized..."

"...the real key isn't inside the vault."

"It's inside your memory."

I stopped.

"What do you mean?"

Salvatore answered.

"Sofia didn't just teach you a lullaby."

"She trained you."

"Every song she sang contained pieces of a code."

"You memorized it before you could even read."

My heart pounded.

"I don't remember any code."

"You will."

"When the time comes."

They escaped through an underground tunnel leading beneath the river.

Behind them...

The chapel exploded.

Marco had destroyed the vault.

Destroyed the evidence.

Or so he believed.

Because hidden inside Vincenzo's jacket...

Was the black cassette.

And hidden inside my mind...

Was the final piece needed to expose every politician, judge, and crime boss who had protected the empire for decades.

As dawn broke over Chicago...

The city believed Lucia Marino was running for her life.

The truth was far more dangerous.

For the first time in twenty-four years...

May you like

The Lost Daughter was no longer hiding.

She was coming for everyone who had stolen her family.
