CHAPTER 1: THE DOG NO ONE DARED TO LOVE

The scream echoed through the shelter.

"EMILY!"

Every volunteer spun around.

A massive steel kennel stood wide open.

Standing in the doorway was Bob—the dog everyone believed was beyond saving.

Nearly one hundred pounds of muscle.

One torn ear.

Old scars crossing his face like lightning.

Eyes so cold they had frightened every trainer who had ever tried to help him.

For months, the shelter had warned visitors about Kennel Seventeen.

"Don't get close."

"Don't look him in the eyes."

"And whatever you do... never let him out."

But now the impossible had happened.

Three-year-old Emily stood only inches away.

Her tiny hand still rested on the kennel door.

Nobody was close enough to stop what came next.

The little girl looked up at the enormous dog...

...and smiled.

"Hi, puppy."

The shelter manager felt his heart stop.

Bob slowly stepped forward.

One step.

Then another.

His claws clicked against the concrete.

Emily's mother collapsed to her knees.

"No... please..."

The volunteers expected blood.

Instead...

Bob lowered his giant head.

Everyone held their breath.

The dog sniffed the child's tiny shoes.

Then her hands.

Then he did something no living person had ever seen.

His tail moved.

Once.

Twice.

A slow, uncertain wag.

Silence filled the shelter.

"Did... did Bob just wag his tail?" whispered one volunteer.

No one answered.

They couldn't.

Because Bob had never wagged his tail.

Not once.

Not in four years.

Emily giggled and gently touched his scarred forehead.

The giant dog closed his eyes.

A single tear rolled down the face of the oldest volunteer.

"I've waited years to see that."

But their miracle lasted only seconds.

Outside the shelter...

A black pickup truck rolled slowly into the parking lot.

The driver froze the instant he saw Bob through the fence.

His face turned white.

"No..."

He whispered one terrified sentence.

"They found him."

Then he grabbed his phone.

"Tell the boss."

"The dog is still alive."

None of the people inside the shelter realized that Bob wasn't simply an abandoned dog...

May you like

He was the last living witness to a crime that had destroyed an entire illegal fighting operation years earlier.

And someone had finally come back to erase that evidence forever.
