CHAPTER 2: THE MEN WHO WANTED BOB DEAD

That evening, the shelter closed early.
Nobody wanted Bob separated from Emily.
For the first time in years, the aggressive dog refused to return to the back corner of his kennel.
Instead...
He lay quietly beside the little girl's chair while she colored pictures with broken crayons.
Everyone stared.
The impossible kept happening.
Emily hugged him.
Bob didn't move.
She leaned against his shoulder.
Bob simply watched the room.
She even placed a tiny pink ribbon around his neck.
The giant fighter who once terrified everyone accepted it without resistance.
The staff couldn't believe their eyes.
"He trusts her..."
"No..."
The veterinarian shook her head.
"He isn't trusting her."
"He's protecting her."
Those words suddenly made sense.
Every time someone unfamiliar approached Emily...
Bob quietly stepped between them.
Never growling.
Never barking.
Just watching.
Hours later...
Headlights appeared outside.
Three men entered wearing expensive jackets.
They smiled politely.
"We heard about Bob."
"We'd like to adopt him."
The shelter manager frowned.
"That's strange."
"You've never visited before."
One man slid a thick envelope across the desk.
"We're willing to make a generous donation."
The manager never touched it.
Something felt wrong.
Then Bob exploded.
A terrifying roar echoed through the building.
The same violent barking everyone feared returned instantly.
But this time...
He wasn't attacking.
He was warning.
He threw himself between Emily and the three strangers.
Hackles raised.
Teeth exposed.
His eyes locked onto the tallest man.
The stranger took one involuntary step backward.
Emily looked confused.
"Bob says they're bad."
The room fell silent.
Children often imagined things.
But then one volunteer recognized the tattoo on the stranger's wrist.
His face drained of color.
"I've seen that symbol before..."
"It was in the police report."
The tattoo belonged to one of the largest illegal dog-fighting rings ever investigated in the state.
The smiling visitors weren't adopters.
They had come to finish what they started years ago.
The shelter doors locked automatically.
Someone quietly dialed 911.
The tallest man realized the trap.
His smile disappeared.
"So..."
"You finally remember us."
He reached inside his jacket.
People screamed.
But before anyone could react...
Bob launched himself forward.
Not to attack...
To shield Emily.

The massive dog stood between the little girl and the danger.
Ready to give his life for the child who had shown him kindness for only a single afternoon.
