CHAPTER 1 — The Girl Who Refused to Stop Waiting

The school gym shimmered beneath strings of golden lights. Music floated gently through the room as fathers laughed with their daughters, spinning them across the polished wooden floor. Cameras flashed. Teachers smiled. Everywhere, memories were being made.
Except for one little girl.
Seven-year-old Emma stood near the entrance in a lavender dress that looked almost magical beneath the lights. She had chosen it herself after spending nearly an hour twirling in front of the mirror.
"Do I look like a princess, Mommy?"
"You look more beautiful than any princess," her mother had answered, forcing a smile while hiding tears that threatened to fall.
Emma believed her.
She believed something else, too.
She believed her father was coming.
Her mother, Sarah, wasn't so sure.
For three years, Emma's father had never missed a birthday call. Never forgotten Christmas. Never failed to send letters filled with stories about stars, courage, and hope.
But he had never been able to come home.
Whenever Emma asked why, Sarah simply replied,
"Because he's helping people who need him."
It wasn't a lie.
It just wasn't the whole truth.
That evening, every few minutes Emma looked toward the gym doors.
Every sound made her heart race.
Every opening door made her smile.
Every stranger who walked inside quietly broke that smile again.
Still...
She kept waiting.
Children began whispering.
"Where's her dad?"
"Maybe he forgot."
"I heard she doesn't even have one."
Their laughter grew louder.
Sarah wanted to take Emma home before the pain became unbearable.
Then Melissa appeared.
Everyone at school knew Melissa.
Perfect hair.
Perfect clothes.
Perfect family.
Or at least that's what she wanted everyone to believe.
She walked toward Emma wearing a smile that felt colder than winter.
"Oh sweetheart," she said loudly enough for everyone nearby to hear.
"Still waiting?"
Emma nodded politely.
"My daddy said he'll come."
Melissa laughed softly.
"This isn't a place for children without fathers."
A few parents exchanged uncomfortable glances.
No one spoke.
Melissa leaned closer.
"If your father cared, he'd already be here."
Emma's tiny fingers tightened around her dress.
Her eyes filled with tears.
Still...
She whispered,
"He promised."
Melissa rolled her eyes.
"Some promises are never meant to be kept."
The gym grew strangely quiet.
Even the music seemed softer.
Sarah stepped forward, ready to defend her daughter.
But before she could...
The school's front doors suddenly burst open.
And every single person turned to look.
May you like
No one could have imagined who had just arrived.
