CHAPTER 2 — The Man Everyone Thought Would Never Return

Heavy boots echoed across the silent gym.

One.

Two.

Three.

The room froze.

A tall man wearing a military dress uniform stepped inside.

His left arm rested inside a black sling.

His face carried fresh scars.

Behind him walked two soldiers.

Then came the principal.

Then the superintendent.

No one spoke.

Sarah covered her mouth.

Emma blinked.

"Daddy?"

The man searched the room until his eyes found one tiny girl in a lavender dress.

His entire expression changed.

Every ounce of military discipline disappeared.

He dropped to one knee.

"I'm sorry I'm late, Princess."

Emma screamed with joy.

"DADDY!"

She ran faster than she ever had before.

He caught her with one arm, lifting her carefully despite his injuries.

The entire gym erupted into applause.

Sarah couldn't stop crying.

Melissa's smile vanished.

The principal stepped to the microphone.

"Parents... students..."

"I think everyone deserves to know why Captain Daniel Carter couldn't attend any of Emma's school events."

The room became perfectly still.

"Three weeks ago..."

"He was leading the rescue of children trapped after a devastating earthquake overseas."

Photos appeared on the large screen.

Collapsed buildings.

Destroyed schools.

Children being carried to safety.

Captain Carter lifting a frightened little girl from beneath concrete.

Another photograph.

Daniel lying in a hospital bed.

Another.

Receiving a medal.

"He nearly lost his life saving twenty-three children."

Gasps filled the room.

"And despite doctors ordering complete rest..."

"He insisted on leaving the hospital today."

"He said there was only one mission more important than recovering."

"Keeping a promise to his daughter."

Silence.

Deep...

Overwhelming...

Silence.

Melissa slowly lowered her head.

For the first time that evening...

She had nothing to say.

Emma looked up at her father.

"You came."

Daniel kissed her forehead.

"I told you."

"I always keep my promises."

But the biggest surprise...

Hadn't happened yet.

Because Daniel wasn't finished.

He stood up...

Turned toward Melissa...

May you like

And quietly asked one question that left the entire room speechless.
