Chapter 5 - The Trial Begins & A Hidden HandThe trial of The State v. Bellacourt Enterprises became the trial of the decade. The courtroom was packed every single day with reporters, cameras, and curious spectators eager to watch the fall of one of the region's most prominent elite dynasties.

Evan and Victoria sat at the defense table in dark suits, looking gaunt and defeated. Across the aisle sat the prosecution team, with Claire serving as the state’s key expert witness.

On the fifth day of testimony, the defense called a surprising surprise witness to the stand: Arthur Pendelton, a reclusive offshore financial advisor who had managed high-net-worth accounts across Europe and the Caribbean.

Sterling, the defense lawyer, paced before the jury box with a confident smile.

"Mr. Pendelton," Sterling asked, pointing toward Claire. "Can you tell the court who originally established the shell accounts in the Cayman Islands under the corporate alias 'Vanguard Operations'?"

Pendelton cleared his throat, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "According to the master incorporation papers filed six years ago, the primary beneficiary and sole managing member of Vanguard Operations was not Evan Bellacourt... nor was it Victoria Bellacourt."

A low murmur rippled through the courtroom.

"Who was it, Mr. Pendelton?" Sterling asked loudly, looking directly at the jury.

"It was registered under the birth name Claire Elizabeth Vance—now known as Claire Bellacourt."

The courtroom erupted into instant chaos. Gavel slaps echoed as the judge shouted for order. Reporters began frantically typing on their laptops. Evan looked back at Claire with a victorious, sinister grin, while Victoria sat back in her chair with a cold, triumphant smirk.

"Objection! Defense is introducing unvetted documents!" the lead prosecutor shouted, standing up.

"Overruled," the judge stated sternly. "The witness will provide the official court exhibits for inspection."

Claire felt her heart drop into her chest. Six years ago? Six years ago, she hadn't even met Evan! She was still working as a junior forensic auditor in another district!

During a frantic ten-minute recess, Claire, Mara, and their legal team huddled in the small private room behind the courtroom.

"How is this possible?" Mara demanded, sifting through the defense exhibit printouts. "Claire, did you ever have any financial accounts under your maiden name in the Caymans?"

"Never!" Claire said, her brain racing at top speed. "I didn't even have a passport six years ago! Look at the signature on those early incorporation papers—it’s typed, not handwritten!"

Claire pulled her laptop onto the table and opened her master audit database, pulling up the hidden sub-ledgers she had seized from the vineyard’s physical safe on the night of her labor. She searched for the name Vanguard Operations.

"Wait..." Claire whispered, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "Look at the registration address for Vanguard Operations six years ago. It’s registered to a law firm in Delaware: Sterling & Associates."

Mara leaned in close. "That’s Victoria’s current defense attorney's firm!"

Claire clicked deeper into the encrypted metadata of the filing. A hidden beneficiary name appeared buried deep inside the corporate tax registration files.

It wasn't Evan. It wasn't Victoria. And it wasn't Claire.

The primary controller of the master offshore account—the entity that had been stealing money from Bellacourt Vineyard and framing Claire from the very beginning—was Julian Sterling, the defense attorney's brother, who also happened to be the senior managing partner of the private equity firm that funded Celeste’s lavish lifestyle.

The Bellacourt family hadn't just been committing fraud. They were being manipulated by their own legal council, who was using Evan’s greed and Victoria’s vanity to run a hundred-million-dollar international money-laundering ring—and they had used Claire as the ultimate scapegoat to take the fall when the house of cards collapsed.

Claire looked up at Mara, a sharp, deadly smile spreading across her face.

"They just walked right into my trap," Claire said softly. "Re-open the witness list. I'm taking the stand."
