Chapter 4 - The Poisoned LegacyBy the fourth week following the wedding raid, the Bellacourt legal team managed to secure a temporary bail release for Victoria Bellacourt, collateralizing her remaining un-seized personal real estate properties. Evan remained behind bars, unable to meet the strict financial conditions set by the federal judge.

Claire had moved out of the marital home and into a secured, undisclosed apartment provided through witness protection protocols. Her entire days were spent split between nursing little Maya and working alongside state prosecutors to finalize the indictment.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Claire received a call from her primary attorney, David Vance.
"Claire, Victoria Bellacourt’s lead defense council just reached out," David said over the speakerphone. "They want an emergency sit-down. Off the record. Victoria is offering a full settlement proposal."
Claire looked at Maya resting peacefully in her swing. "What kind of settlement?"
"They want to talk custody and criminal immunity," David replied. "They're desperate. Meet us at my office in an hour if you're up for it."
An hour later, Claire walked into the high-rise conference room in downtown, wearing a crisp black blazer, her hair pulled back into a tight, professional bun. Across the long glass table sat Victoria Bellacourt, looking aged and exhausted, though she still wore a pristine pearls necklace and a double-breasted designer suit. Next to her was her high-powered defense attorney, Richard Sterling.
Victoria didn't smile. She stared at Claire with an intensity that mixed fury with profound contempt.
"Claire," Victoria began, her voice strained. "You've made your point. You've humiliated our family in every major tabloid in the country. Are you satisfied?"
"I’m doing my job, Victoria," Claire replied calmly, taking her seat. "You broke the law. I documented it."
"Let's skip the moral lectures," Sterling interrupted, opening a blue leather folder. "Mrs. Bellacourt is prepared to make a very generous arrangement. If you drop your cooperation with the State Attorney General and execute an affidavit stating that the digital signatures were the result of a system glitch or unauthorized third-party hacking, my client will execute the following terms."
Sterling slid a piece of paper across the table.
Claire looked down at the numbers.
"Ten million dollars in a tax-free Swiss trust," Sterling said. "Plus, full ownership of the Malibu beach house, and an immediate, uncontested divorce settlement from Evan with ten thousand dollars a month in child support."
Claire didn't react. She slowly raised her eyes to Victoria. "And what happens to the baby?"
Victoria leaned forward over the table, her eyes narrowing into cold slits.
"You will sign a full joint-custody agreement giving me primary guardianship of Maya on weekends and holidays," Victoria spat softly. "A Bellacourt child will not be raised in a cramped government apartment by an ungrateful clerk. You will take the money, you will fix the mess you created, and you will let us rebuild our lives."
Claire looked at the settlement offer, then looked at Victoria’s cold, arrogant face.
"You really don't get it, do you, Victoria?" Claire said softly.
Claire reached into her purse, pulled out a small black digital recorder, and pressed the stop button. A soft beep rang out across the quiet room.
Sterling’s face turned pale. "What is that? You can't record an off-the-record settlement discussion!"
"In this state, witness tampering and bribery of a state official during an active prosecution are felony offenses that do not fall under attorney-client settlement privilege," Claire said calmly, standing up.
Victoria stood up so fast her chair scraped loudly against the floor. "You treacherous little parasite! I gave you a home! I welcomed you into my family!"

"You tried to send me to federal prison for twenty years so you could buy more crystal chandeliers!" Claire fired back, her voice echoing off the glass walls like thunder. "You locked me in a bathroom while I was in labor because you cared more about a photographer than a human life! You don't get my daughter. You don't get my silence. And as of this minute, your bail is going to be revoked."
Claire turned on her heel and walked out of the room, leaving Victoria screaming at her lawyer in absolute panic.
