Chapter 3 - The Deeper BetrayalTwo days later, Claire sat up in her hospital bed, her daughter asleep in a clear bassinet beside her. The baby had been named Maya—a name representing strength and water.

The door to the room opened softly, and Special Agent Mara Voss walked in, carrying a thick leather briefcase and two cups of black coffee.
"How are you holding up?" Mara asked, setting one cup on the bedside tray and taking a seat.
"I’m sore, exhausted, but relieved," Claire replied, gazing lovingly at Maya. "Is it done?"
Mara sighed, opening her briefcase and pulling out a blue folder. "The initial arrests are complete. Evan, Victoria, and their chief financial officer were arraigned yesterday morning. Judge set bail at five million each, but since we froze all their liquid assets, they're sitting in county jail."
Claire nodded slowly. "And Celeste?"
"Released on her own recognizance for now, though her wedding dress was seized as an asset purchased with stolen funds," Mara said with a grim smirk. "Her billionaire fiancé called off the engagement before midnight on the day of the raid. His publicist released a statement saying he had 'no prior knowledge of the Bellacourt family’s financial improprieties.'"
Claire squeezed her eyes shut. "Evan told me he didn't know about the shell accounts. He swore to me three years ago that his mother handled all the high-level investments."
Mara leaned forward, her expression darkening. She pulled out a stack of printouts and laid them on Claire’s lap.
"Claire... there's something you need to see. Something we discovered when we pulled the server logs from Evan’s private laptop during the raid."
Claire looked at the documents. Her stomach dropped into a cold, heavy pit.
The documents were internal corporate emails and electronic signature transfers dated over the past six months. But it wasn't just Evan’s signature on the fraudulent offshore wire transfers.
Her own digital signature was stamped across dozens of illegal tax filings.
"He was using my credentials," Claire whispered, her voice shaking as horror washed over her. "When I left my encrypted government laptop open on my home desk while cooking dinner... he was copying my security keys."
"He wasn't just participating in the fraud, Claire," Mara said gently, placing a hand over Claire’s trembling fingers. "He and Victoria were setting you up. If our unit ever caught wind of the Bellacourt Vineyard's shell accounts, the paper trail was specifically engineered to point back to you. They were going to frame you as the criminal mastermind who used her auditor position to steal millions from her own in-laws."
Claire stared at the signatures on the paper—her name, her employee ID number, stamped cleanly beneath authorizations for millions of dollars routed to bank accounts in the Cayman Islands.
The humiliation she had suffered over the years—the snide remarks about her simple wardrobe, the jokes about her government salary, the pat on the head while being called "the little accountant"—it wasn't just arrogance. It was a calculated, cold-blooded psychological game designed to keep her feeling small, weak, and unsuspicious while they constructed a cage around her life.
Claire looked over at her sleeping baby. The tears in her eyes dried, replaced by an icy, searing fire.
"They thought I was quiet because I was weak," Claire said, her voice dropping an octave, razor-sharp. "They thought I wouldn't fight back because I loved Evan."

She looked back at Mara.
"Pull up the secondary evidence files, Mara. It’s time to show the grand jury what happens when you try to frame the person who holds the keys to the vault."
