Chapter 7 - The Final Desperate MoveBy late afternoon, the trial was suspended as federal authorities placed attorney Richard Sterling under immediate arrest right inside the courtroom. With their defense shattered and their conspiracy fully exposed, Evan and Victoria were remanded back to custody without bail to await final sentencing.

However, the drama was far from over.

Late that evening, Claire returned to her high-security apartment complex accompanied by Agent Mara Voss. The building was gated, protected by digital access keys and round-the-clock surveillance.

As Claire stepped into the lobby carrying little Maya in her infant car seat, the emergency lights suddenly flashed yellow, and the automated fire alarm system began to blare loudly.

DANGER. EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY.

"Stay close to me," Mara ordered instantly, pulling her service weapon from her holster. "This isn't a normal alarm."

The elevator doors slid open, and two men in black security uniforms stepped out, holding heavy plastic zipties and tactical tasers. Behind them stepped out Celeste Bellacourt—her eyes wild, hair unkempt, holding a small silver pistol.

"Give me the baby, Claire," Celeste shrieked over the blaring siren. "Give me the baby right now!"

"Celeste, put the gun down!" Mara shouted, aiming her weapon at Celeste. "You are facing federal obstruction and felony assault charges!"

"My family is ruined because of her!" Celeste screamed, tears streaming down her makeup-streaked face. "My wedding was destroyed! My fiancé left me! My mother and brother are going to prison for twenty years! We have nothing left! Nothing!"

"You did this to yourselves, Celeste!" Claire said, stepping in front of Maya’s car seat, her body acting as a shield. "You built your entire life on stolen money and lies!"

"Shut up! Shut up!" Celeste waved the gun wildly. "If we take the baby, Evan’s lawyer says we can force a plea bargain! We can exchange the child for immunity!"

Suddenly, a heavy side door crashed open.

"Celeste! Stop!"

Evan Bellacourt burst through the door, wearing dark civilian clothes, breathing heavily. He had managed to escape custody during the chaotic transport shift following his lawyer’s arrest, using a smuggled key card provided by corrupt security personnel.

"Evan!" Celeste cried out. "I got them! I got Claire! We can take the baby and leave the country!"

Evan looked at Celeste holding the gun, then looked at Claire, who stood unflinchingly between the firearm and their newborn daughter. He looked at Mara’s steady gun aimed at his chest.

For the first time in his life, the reality of his actions crushed down upon him. He saw the baby sleeping quietly in the carrier, totally innocent, protected only by the mother he had betrayed, humiliated, and locked away.

"Put the gun down, Celeste," Evan whispered, his voice cracking.

"What?!" Celeste screamed. "Evan, we can get away! We have the boat in Mexico!"

"There is no boat, Celeste!" Evan yelled, tears streaming down his face. "It’s over! Sterling took everything! Mom took everything! There is nothing left!"

Evan took a slow step toward his sister. "Claire was the only real thing in my life... and I helped them destroy her."

"Don't move!" Celeste panicked, her finger tightening on the trigger.

In a fraction of a second, Evan lunged forward, throwing his body between Celeste’s gun and Claire.

A loud shot echoed through the concrete lobby.

Evan collapsed to the floor with a heavy thud as Mara fired two swift non-lethal shots, disarming Celeste and dropping her to the ground. Tactical teams flooded through the front doors seconds later, securing the perimeter and pinning Celeste to the floor.

Claire dropped to her knees beside Evan, holding Maya tightly against her chest. Blood was spreading across Evan’s shoulder.

"Claire..." Evan gasped, looking up at her with tears in his eyes as paramedics rushed into the building. "I’m... I’m sorry... I’m so sorry for everything..."

Claire looked down at the man she had once loved—a man whose cowardice had brought them all to the edge of destruction.

"It’s too late for sorry, Evan," Claire said quietly, as the paramedics pulled him onto a gurney. "But thank you for saving our daughter."
