Chapter 1 - The Decline and the Cold Hard DirtThe icy air of Valle de Bravo cut through Beatriz Salgado’s silk blouse like a blade.

Standing on the cobblestone driveway outside the gated estate, she clutched her designer leather handbag as if it were a shield against reality. Behind her, two towering security guards stood silently by the wrought-iron gates, their arms crossed, blocking any path back into the warmth of the villa.

"Do you have any idea who I am?" Beatriz shrieked, her voice echoing down the foggy mountain road. "My son owns half of Mexico City’s financial sector! He will have your jobs! He will buy this entire property and tear it down!"

The property manager didn't even blink. He adjusted his pristine suit jacket, held up an iPad, and tapped the screen calmly.

"Señora Salgado," he said, his voice entirely void of emotion. "The rental agreement was under the name of CEO Valeria Ortega. Upon her explicit instruction—and with her full authorization as the sole paying party—the reservation has been terminated immediately. Furthermore, you have been flagged in our national luxury hospitality network as non-paying trespassers. I suggest you vacate the private road before I contact the State Police."

"Mom, stop it! People are looking!" Ximena hissed, ducking behind her mother to hide her face from a passing Range Rover.

Ximena’s hands were trembling—not from the cold, but from sheer panic. She had spent the last two hours recording Instagram stories from the villa’s infinity pool, tagging luxury brands, boasting to her 150,000 followers about her family’s "private weekend retreat." If anyone found out she had been thrown out onto the street like trash, her social media career would die overnight.

"Quiet, Ximena!" Beatriz snapped, digging through her bag. "Valeria is playing a cheap, pathetic game. She thinks she can intimidate me? She’s a peasant from Hidalgo who got lucky. Mauricio will sort this out in two minutes. He probably doesn't even know his ungrateful wife is acting like this."

Beatriz pulled out her sleek platinum card—the one Mauricio had handed her three years ago, promising her that "family should never worry about expenses." She pulled up her phone, opened her private driver app, and requested an executive armored SUV to haul them back to their penthouse in Mexico City.

A red warning flashed on her screen. Beatriz stared at it, her heart giving a violent thud.

"System error," she muttered frantically, tapping the screen over and over. "Cheap technology."

She opened her banking app to transfer funds directly.

"Mom... what's happening?" Ximena’s voice broke as she watched her mother’s face turn ash-white. "Call Mauricio! Call him right now!"

Beatriz dialed Mauricio’s cell phone.

Ring... ring... ring...

"The number you have dialed is currently unavailable or has blocked your caller ID. Please leave a message."

"He blocked me?" Beatriz gasped, clutching her throat. "My own son blocked my number?!"

Desperate, she called Valeria.

It rang once. Valeria answered.

"Valeria!" Beatriz barked, her panic instantly morphing into venomous rage. "What is the meaning of this childish stunt?! You had security drag us out into the freezing cold! My platinum card isn't working! Turn it back on this instant and send a driver to pick us up, or so help me God, I will ruin you in front of every high-society family in the capital!"

On the other end of the line, the sound of crashing ocean waves could be heard.

Valeria’s voice came through crystal clear, cold, calm, and utterly detached.

"Beatriz," Valeria said slowly. "You told my mother that she belonged in a cheap hotel with people of her own social class. You kicked two elderly people out because you thought their existence contaminated your luxury."

"They are peasants!" Beatriz spat. "They don't belong in a place like this!"

"No, Beatriz," Valeria replied softly. "You don't belong there. The credit card you carry? Canceled. The luxury apartment in Polanco you live in? The lease is in my company’s name, and notice of eviction has already been served to the front desk. The Mercedes in your garage? My corporate fleet manager is towing it back tonight."

Beatriz’s breath hitched. "You... you can't do that! Mauricio pays for all of that!"

"Mauricio earns a decent salary as my Chief Financial Officer," Valeria said smoothly. "But I own ninety percent of the equity. Every luxury you have consumed for the last five years was paid for by the sweat, blood, and tears of the woman whose parents you just called trash. Enjoy the walk down the mountain, Beatriz."
