Chapter 1 - The Trap Is Set

The morning sun broke over Lake Michigan, casting a cold, metallic glare across our marble kitchen. Ethan sat at the head of the mahogany dining table like a king on an illegitimate throne. His silk robe was loosely tied, and his hands were folded over a plate of imported smoked salmon, eggs benedict, and fresh espressoâa lavish spread I had spent the last two hours preparing with swollen eyes and a purple jaw.
Beverly sat to his right, her silver hair perfectly coiffed, delicate diamond earrings catching the light. She took a slow, deliberate sip of her Earl Grey tea and smirked.
âYou see, Ethan?â Beverly cooed, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. âAll a woman needs is a firm hand to remind her of her place. Look at her nowâobedient, quiet, serving her superiors.â
Ethan chuckled, cutting a piece of salmon with precise, cruel movements. He looked up at me, his eyes dark with arrogance. âLooks like you finally came to your senses, Emily. Itâs amazing what a little clarity can do for a womanâs perspective.â
I stood near the kitchen island, hands folded neatly in front of my plain linen dress. I didnât flinch. I didnât lower my head. I simply watched him chew.
âYou think this is over, Ethan?â I asked softly.
Ethan set his fork down with a loud clack. His face darkened instantly. âExcuse me? Did you not learn your lesson yesterday? Or do I need to take you back upstairs?â
âLet her try something, son,â Beverly sneered, placing her teacup on the saucer. âShe has nowhere to go. Her pathetic little accounting job barely covers her clothes. Without you, Ethan, sheâd be sleeping under a bridge.â
I almost smiled. If only they knew.
Suddenly, the front gate chime echoed through the intercom system, followed by the heavy thud of multiple luxury car doors slamming shut in our cobblestone driveway.
Ethan frowned, looking toward the grand foyer. âAre you expecting someone, Mother?â
âNo,â Beverly replied, her brow furrowing. âDid you invite your business partners over without telling me?â
âNo...â Ethan stood up, adjusting his robe, his ego instantly taking over. âWhoever it is, theyâre about to find out you donât drop by the Sterling-Vance estate unannounced.â
He strode toward the massive mahogany front doors, stepping with the unearned confidence of a man who thought he owned the world. Beverly followed closely behind, eager to watch her son assert his dominant manhood. I walked slowly behind them both, taking a seat on the velvet settee near the entrance, holding my cup of tea.
Ethan yanked the heavy front door open, his mouth already formed to shout an insult.
âWhat the hell do you think youâreââ
The words died in his throat.
Standing on our porch were six men in dark, bespoke Italian suits. Behind them, three black Escalades and a rare vintage Rolls-Royce Phantom lined our driveway. But it wasnât the cars that drained the color from Ethanâs faceâit was the silver-haired man standing at the center of the group, leaning on a cane with a solid platinum crest.
Arthur Sterling. The legendary founder of Sterling Global Banking, a man worth over thirty billion dollars, and a figure feared in every financial capital across the globe.
Beside Arthur stood Marcus Vance, the top criminal prosecutor in the Midwest, and Richard Hayes, the Chief Executive Officer of First National Bank.
âA-Mr. Sterling?â Ethan stammered, his voice cracking like a terrified teenager. âSir... what an absolute honor! What are you doing at my home?â
Arthur Sterling didnât look at Ethan. His icy blue eyes swept past the doorway, fixing directly onto me. He took a heavy step forward, his cane clicking against the marble threshold.
May you like
âYour home?â Arthurâs voice boomed, deep and thunderous. âEthan Sterling-Vance... you are standing in my daughterâs house.â
CHAPTER 1 HOOK: Ethan turned to look at me in absolute shock, but before he could process the word daughter, Arthur Sterling raised his cane, pointing it straight at Ethanâs neck. âAnd I hear youâve been placing your filthy hands on my heir.â
