Chapter 7 - The Final Reckoning

CRACK.
Ethan swung the crowbar with all his strength, but I dropped low, sidestepping his clumsy, enraged attack. The heavy iron bar smashed into the marble pillar, sending stone chips flying into the air.
Ethan stumbled forward from his momentum.
Before he could recover, I kicked the back of his knee with full force. He went down hard onto the stone floor, grunting in pain.
âYou think Iâve been sitting around playing house for three years, Ethan?â I said, grabbing the heavy brass fire poker from beside the fireplace. âMy father made sure I took tactical defense training since I was twelve years old. I let you hit me because I needed the evidence on tapeânot because I couldnât break your collarbone!â
Ethan scrambled onto his back, gasping, looking up at me with sudden, terrifying realization.
Beverly screamed, grabbing a heavy glass vase from a side table and lunging toward my back.
âGET AWAY FROM MY SON!â Beverly shrieked.
THWACK.
Without even looking back, I swung the brass fire poker backward, shattering the vase in Beverlyâs hands and sending her crashing into the glass display case. She collapsed onto the floor, covered in shattered glass and red wine, groaning in agony.
Ethan tried to reach for the crowbar again, but I slammed my heel directly down onto his wrist.
CRACK.
Ethan let out a blood-curdling scream as his wrist snapped under my boot. The crowbar rolled uselessly across the floor.
âAAAAGH! MY HAND! MY HAND!â Ethan wept, clutching his broken wrist to his chest, rolling on the marble floor like a wounded animal.
I stepped over him, placing the point of the brass fire poker directly against his throat, pressing just hard enough to draw a tiny drop of blood.
âLook at me, Ethan,â I commanded, my voice cold enough to freeze the room.
Ethan looked up through his tears, shaking, terrified, completely stripped of his arrogance, his wealth, and his pride.
âPlease...â Ethan sobbed, his chest heaving violently. âEmily... please don't kill me... Iâm sorry... Iâm so sorry...â
âYouâre not sorry you hit me,â I said, staring into his hollow eyes. âYouâre just sorry I was the heiress, and you were the prey.â
Sirens began to wail in the distance, blue and red police lights flashing through the rain-soaked floor-to-ceiling windows.
Marcus Vance and a squad of armed SWAT officers burst through the shattered front doors, weapons raised.
âDROP THE WEAPON! POLICE!â
I slowly lifted the brass poker from Ethanâs throat, stepped back, and tossed it onto the floor.
May you like
âHeâs all yours,â I said to the officers.
CHAPTER 7 HOOK: As the officers pinned Ethan and Beverly to the floor, Marcus Vance walked over to me, holding a encrypted satellite phone. âEmily... itâs your fatherâs physician. You need to get to the hospital right now. Arthur just had a massive stroke.â
