Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Illusion

The silence in the grand foyer was so thick you could hear the rain tapping softly against the glass domes above.

Beverly stepped forward, her face pale, but her arrogance refusing to die. “Daughter? Heir? What kind of ridiculous trick is this? Emily is an orphan! Ethan saved her from the gutter! Show some respect, old man, or I’ll have security throw you off our property!”

Marcus Vance, the lead prosecutor, stepped into the doorway, flashing a Federal badge and a stack of legal documents. “Mrs. Vance, I strongly advise you to shut your mouth. The security team outside currently surrounding this perimeter works for Sterling Global. Furthermore, this property is registered under the sole name of Emily Sterling. Your son doesn’t own a single brick of this estate.”

Ethan’s eyes bulged as he looked from the prosecutor to me. “Emily... what is he talking about? Your last name is Hayes! You worked at a small accounting firm!”

I slowly stood up from the velvet settee, taking a graceful sip of my tea before placing it on the side table. I walked over to the doorway, stepping right past Ethan as if he were nothing more than a stain on the rug.

“My legal name has always been Emily Sterling,” I said quietly, looking Ethan dead in the eye. “I took my mother’s maiden name, Hayes, when I went to college because I wanted to see if anyone would love me for me—not for my family’s thirty-billion-dollar fortune. When I met you, Ethan, I thought you were different. I thought you were kind.”

Ethan swallowed hard, his throat bobbing frantically. “Emily, baby... wait. This—this is a misunderstanding! I love you! You know I love you!”

“You love my meekness,” I corrected, my tone dropping to an icy edge. “You loved the power you thought you had over me. You loved hitting a woman you thought couldn’t hit back.”

“I was stressed!” Ethan yelled, his voice desperate now, cracking with panic. “The business—the firm is going through a hard time! You know how hard I work!”

Richard Hayes, the CEO of First National, stepped forward, opening a thick leather folder. “Speaking of your firm, Ethan... yesterday at 4:00 PM, Miss Sterling exercised her rights as the majority shareholder of Vance Capital. She pulled all $400 million of Sterling Global backing from your firm.”

Ethan choked on his breath. “What?! You can’t do that! That’s... that’s my entire operating liquidity! My investors will destroy me!”

“They already are,” Richard replied coldly. “Trading on Vance Capital was suspended twenty minutes ago. Your stock has crashed to zero. You are officially bankrupt, Ethan.”

Beverly gasped, clutching her chest, staggering backward against the mirror console. “No! No, this isn’t real! Ethan, tell them this is a lie!”

“It gets better,” I said, stepping closer to Ethan until I was just inches from his pale, sweating face. “Do you remember that false drawer under the kitchen sink? The one you never bothered to check?”

CHAPTER 2 HOOK: I pulled my smartphone from my pocket and tapped the screen. A loud, crystal-clear audio recording began playing through the foyer speakers: “The fourth slap echoed through the house... A wife has to be disciplined early... Tomorrow morning, I want a real breakfast waiting for me.” Ethan’s face turned from pale white to ash gray as Marcus Vance pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs.
