Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

Ethanâs words echoed in my mind like a ghost that refused to be quieted. Ask him what happened to your mother.
Two days later, I was standing in the private subterranean vault of Sterling Global Bank in Zurich, Switzerland. The air was cold, smelling of old paper, heavy steel, and old money.
My father stood outside the vault door, leaning heavily on his platinum cane, watching me with an unreadable expression.
âYou shouldnât be looking into this, Emily,â Arthur said, his voice unusually soft, almost frail. âSome secrets are buried because they are too heavy for the living to carry.â
âYou told me Ethan was a monster because of his father,â I said, stepping inside the vault and sliding open safety deposit box #001. âIf I am going to destroy him, I need to know if the blood in my veins is clean.â
Inside the box lay a single leather-bound journal and a audio cassette tape dated October 14, 2002âthe exact day my mother died in a high-speed car crash.
I pulled out the tape player sitting on the shelf, inserted the cassette, and pressed PLAY.
Static hissed through the speaker, followed by a tearful, panicked female voiceâmy mother, Eleanor Sterling.
âArthur, please! Stop pushing him! Charles Vance is insane! If you take his company, he said heâll cut the brakes on the carâhe said heâll kill us all!â
Then came my fatherâs voiceâyounger, harder, filled with ruthless ambition: âLet him try, Eleanor. Vance Capital belongs to me now. If he wants a war, Iâll take everything he has, including his family.â
The tape cut off with the loud screeching of tires, a violent collision, and dead silence.
I dropped the tape player onto the concrete floor. It shattered into plastic pieces.
I turned around to face my father. Tears were finally streaming down my cheeks, hot and bitter.
âMy mother didnât die in an accident,â I whispered, my voice shaking with pure agony. âYou used her as bait to destroy the Vance family twenty-four years ago. You let Charles Vance kill her so you could take over his corporate empire!â
Arthur Sterling closed his eyes, his weathered face aging ten years in a single second.
âI didnât know Charles would go that far,â Arthur choked out, a rare tear slipping down his cheek. âI thought he was bluffing. When she died... I swore I would protect you. I took Charlesâs son, Ethan, into our orbit. I wanted to see if the son had the same evil as the father. I wanted to destroy them completely...â
May you like
âYou didnât protect me!â I screamed, my voice echoing off the concrete walls. âYou married me off to the son of the man who killed my mother! You put me in the same house as a murderer just to complete your sick, thirty-year revenge fantasy!â
CHAPTER 5 HOOK: Suddenly, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket. It was a emergency text from Marcus Vance: EMILY, COME BACK TO CHICAGO IMMEDIATELY. BEVERLY VANCE JUST POSTED BAIL FOR ETHAN USING AN UNDECLARED OFFSHORE ACCOUNT. THEY ARE HEADING TO YOUR ESTATE.
