Chapter 1 - The Doctor's Chilling RealizationI stared at the medical report in my hand, then at Luna’s clear, intelligent green eyes, and finally at Anna’s pale, hollow face. A cold wave of horror washed down my spine.

"Anna," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "Cats don't exhibit such hyper-specific, calculated behavioral loops without an environmental catalyst. Luna isn't aggressive. She isn't crazy. She’s executing a precision rescue protocol."

Anna blinked, her hands trembling as she pulled her coat tighter around her chest. "A... rescue protocol? From what? It's just my bedroom!"

"Does your bedroom have an en-suite bathroom or a gas fireplace near the headboard?" I asked urgently.

"No... but my late husband, Richard, installed a customized central heating and ventilation duct right behind the headboard four years ago before he went missing," Anna murmured, confusion clouding her eyes.

My heart dropped. Animals have olfactory receptors up to forty times more sensitive than humans. If a silent, odorless killer—like high-concentration carbon monoxide or a heavy, neurotoxic chemical compound—was pooling at mattress level precisely when the heating cycle kicked in at 3:00 AM, Anna was being slowly poisoned every night. And Luna was physically dragging her out of the lethal zone before her brain suffered permanent damage.

"We are going to your house right now," I said, standing up immediately. "Bring Luna. Do not go inside that bedroom alone."

CHAPTER HOOK: As we pulled up to Anna’s secluded Victorian home, I noticed something that made my blood run cold: the second-story bedroom curtain twitched—even though Anna insisted she lived completely alone.
