Chapter 8 - The Shadow's RetaliationThe encrypted message wasn't a warning; it was a countdown.

Three days after discovering Amelia's video vault, the mansion’s advanced security system suddenly flickered and died. All exterior lights snapped off in unison, plunging the sprawling estate into absolute, suffocating darkness.
Inside the nursery, Maya and Toby whimpered, waking up from their sleep as the temperature in the house dropped sharply.
Elise sprang into action, grabbing a heavy tactical flashlight from the hallway drawer and motioning for Julian to stay close. "Stay right behind me," she whispered, her senses dialed to maximum alert. "Do not make a sound."
Heavy footsteps echoed from the grand foyer downstairs. Muffled voices, speaking in harsh, foreign whispers, moved through the corridors with military precision. They weren't police. They weren't reporters. They were professional fixers hired by Nathaniel’s remaining offshore associates to wipe out the remaining evidence in the house—and anyone standing in their way.
"They're looking for the vault," Julian whispered, his voice trembling slightly, though he bravely refused to cry. "The second safe behind the library bookcase."
"Then we beat them to it," Elise said with grim determination.
Instead of hiding, Elise led Julian, Maya, and Toby through the secret service tunnels built into the mansion's original Victorian architecture—tunnels that Amelia’s hidden letters had mapped out in painstaking detail. They slipped silently through the hollow walls, watching through decorative slats as three armed men in black tactical gear breached the library, tearing books from the shelves and smashing furniture in their blind rage.
"Clear the room!" one of the intruders barked in a harsh, accented voice. "Find the digital drive before local law enforcement arrives!"
Elise didn't wait for them to find the safe. Crouched in the dark utility alcove behind the bookcase, she reached for the master manual override switch for the mansion's smart-home security grid—a feature Nathaniel had installed to lock down the entire house during emergencies.
With a swift, silent motion, Elise slammed the heavy manual lever down.

Instantly, heavy steel security shutters slammed down over every window and door in the mansion, trapping the intruders inside. At the same time, high-voltage defensive current surged through the smart-flooring grid, disabling the intruders' tactical equipment and dropping them to their knees in a flash of blinding sparks.
Before the men could recover, the mansion's emergency klaxons wailed to life, and the distant, wailing sirens of federal police units echoed up the winding mountain road.
