Chapter 3 - The Secret Behind the BricksBy midnight, the mansion was a tomb of shadows. Elise tiptoed down the corridor, her flashlight casting long, dancing beams across the expensive oil paintings that lined the walls. Each portrait of Nathaniel and Amelia seemed to watch her, their painted eyes filled with silent accusation.

The nursery fireplace was massive, built from imported French stone. Elise knelt on the cold hearth, running her fingers along the mortar lines. Amelia’s letter had been specific: “Behind the bricks.”
She pressed against the decorative iron grate. Nothing. She tapped the side panels. A hollow thud echoed from the third panel on the left.
With a soft groan, the brickwork shifted inward with a mechanical click.
Elise reached deep into the dark cavity, her fingers brushing against something cold and leather-bound. She pulled it out into the dim light. It wasn't just a ledger; it was a heavy, waterproof dispatch case bearing the confidential seal of Grayson Industries' internal audit team.
Before she could unlatch it, a sharp click echoed behind her.
"What are you doing in my mother's private alcove?"
Elise whipped around. Julian stood in the doorway, his small frame silhouetted against the dim moonlight pouring through the hall window. He wasn't crying. He wasn't holding a prank weapon. He was holding a heavy brass candlestick like a weapon, his knuckles white.
"Julian," Elise whispered, lowering her voice so as not to wake the others. "Put that down."
"You're a spy," the six-year-old hissed, his voice shaking with a terrifying, adult-like intensity. "Just like the men who came before. They look for things. They take things. And then mommy goes away."
"I'm not a spy, Julian," Elise stepped forward slowly, keeping her hands visible. "I'm the only person in this house who knows your mother didn't leave you because she wanted to. She left this for you. And for me."
Julian stared at the leather case in her hands. The tough, defensive wall the six-year-old boy had built around his shattered heart suddenly crumbled. A single tear slipped down his cheek, followed by a sob he tried desperately to swallow.

"She promised she would come back," Julian whispered, dropping the candlestick onto the rug with a heavy thud. "She promised."
Elise closed the distance between them, wrapping her arms around the trembling boy. And in that quiet, midnight hallway, the first true alliance in the Grayson mansion was forged.
