Chapter 10 - The Nursery We Built TogetherSix months later, the downtown estate looked entirely different.

The pale green paint, the gold stars, and the tacky brass plaque of Sloane Vale Interiors were long gone, scrubbed away down to the raw plaster. In their place, a team of master craftsmen had restored the room to its original, timeless elegance—warm ivory walls, hand-carved mahogany molding, and a magnificent antique crib that had been passed down through four generations of Hartwell women.
I sat in the rocking chair by the window, cradling Victoria as she slept peacefully against my shoulder.
My phone buzzed on the side table. A notification from a local financial news blog flashed across the screen:
FORMER TECH EXECUTIVE NATHAN HARTWELL FACES FORECLOSURE AND BANKRUPTCY FOLLOWING FAILED REALTOR VENTURE.
I swiped the notification away without opening it, letting the screen go dark. Nathan was a ghost of a past life—a cautionary tale of what happens when a man mistakes a woman's patience for weakness, and her grace for submission.
Downstairs, the front door opened, and Margaret’s voice echoed up the stairwell as she walked in to review the quarterly trust allocations.
I smiled, kissed the top of my daughter's head, and looked out the window at the bright, clear sky stretching out over the city.
