Chapter 9 - A New FoundationThree weeks after Nathan left, the contractions began.

It was a quiet, rainy Tuesday afternoon when Margaret drove me to the private wing of St. Jude Memorial Hospital. There was no panic, no frantic rushing, and no uncertainty. Just the steady, rhythmic ticking of a clock and the quiet confidence of a woman who knew she controlled her own destiny.

Twelve hours later, the delivery room filled with the sharp, beautiful sound of a newborn cry.

The nurse wrapped my daughter in a soft, white cotton blanket—clean, pristine, and unblemished by anyone else's initials—and placed her gently against my chest.

She had my eyes. She had my grandmother's fierce, stubborn chin. And as I looked down at her tiny, perfect face, a wave of profound, unbreakable peace washed over me.

"Welcome home, Victoria," I whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her dark hair.

Margaret stood by the window, holding a bouquet of white lilies, a rare, genuine smile softening the stern lines of her face. "She's a Hartwell through and through, Evelyn. I can already see it in the way she grips my finger."

"She’ll never have to fight for her place in this world, Margaret," I said, looking down at my daughter. "Because we built the foundation so strong that nothing will ever shake it."
