Chapter 7 - The Courtroom ConfrontationThe family court courtroom was packed to the gills. Word of the spectacular downfall of Nathan Hartwell—once considered one of the city's most promising corporate prodigies—had spread through high-society circles like wildfire.

When I walked through the double doors on Margaret’s arm, flashbulbs popped outside in the corridor, but inside the wood-paneled courtroom, absolute decorum reigned.
Nathan sat at the defense table, flanked by a high-priced divorce attorney who looked like he was regretting every retainer check he had cashed. Nathan looked hollowed out. His hair was uncombed, his collar frayed, and his hands trembled as he shuffled through a stack of empty financial disclosure forms.
Judge Sarah Henderson—a formidable woman with silver hair and an unyielding gaze—adjusted her glasses and looked down from the bench.
"Mr. Hartwell," Judge Henderson said, her voice echoing coldly through the courtroom. "Your counsel has filed an emergency motion requesting an immediate injunction to unfreeze your personal accounts and compel spousal maintenance from Mrs. Hartwell."
Nathan’s attorney stood up quickly. "Yes, Your Honor. My client is currently experiencing catastrophic financial distress due to what can only be described as a retaliatory asset seizure by the petitioner. Mr. Hartwell requires immediate liquidity to maintain his standard of living—"
"Counsel," Judge Henderson interrupted, her tone dropping dangerously low. "Are you referring to the Hartwell Family Trust Fidelity Accord of 1994, which your client legally executed and signed under full disclosure three years ago?"
The attorney hesitated, blinking sweat from his forehead. "Well, Your Honor, that clause is an archaic, predatory mechanism—"
"It is a legally binding pre-marital covenant," Judge Henderson snapped, flipping open the certified document Margaret had placed on the bench. "A covenant that explicitly outlines retroactive forfeiture of assets in the event of unauthorized corporate restructuring combined with marital breach. Furthermore, my court has received certified forensic evidence of six hundred thousand dollars in corporate embezzlement funneled into a private third-party design firm."
She looked straight down at Nathan.
"Mr. Hartwell, you didn't experience a retaliatory seizure. You executed a financial suicide note."

Nathan buried his face in his shaking hands. The silence in the courtroom was absolute.
"Motion denied," Judge Henderson said, striking her gavel with a sharp, echoing crack. "Furthermore, all remaining personal assets, vehicles, and real estate holdings currently registered in Nathan Hartwell’s name are remanded to the Hartwell Trust pending final liquidation and restitution. Court adjourned."
