Chapter 1 - The First DominoThe silence on the other end of the phone was absolute.

For the first time since I was a child, my mother did not have a sharp retort ready. The sound of her breathing changed—a sudden, sharp hitch of air that told me the word report had landed precisely where it was supposed to.
"What are you talking about, Clara?" Denise’s voice dropped its mocking edge, turning defensive, brittle. "We were tired. The kids were acting up. It was a mistake. You're blowing this out of proportion."
"It's not a mistake when you say 'Your mom can deal with it' and walk through the turnstiles, Mom," I said, my voice steady, fueled by an icy clarity I didn't know I possessed. "Disney has security footage. They have the timestamp. They have a formal incident report listing child abandonment. And right now, I'm sitting in my car outside the park gates, about to walk into Guest Relations to pick up my son."
"Clara, don't you dare," Kara chimed in, grabbing the phone from my mother. Her tone was screechy, laced with panic masquerading as authority. "You are ruining a family day over a minor mix-up! If you make a big deal out of this, CPS will get involved, and do you know what that does to our reputations? Dad is on the board of the local bank, and—"
"I don't give a damn about Dad's bank, Kara," I interrupted, the fury finally breaking through my calm veneer. "You left a six-year-old child alone in a crowd of tens of thousands of strangers because he had to use the bathroom and you were in a rush to beat traffic. You didn't lose him. You abandoned him."
I hung up before she could scream another excuse.
My hands gripped the steering wheel as I stared out the windshield at the towering entrance arch of the park. My phone buzzed instantly with a text from Denise: If you ruin our family over this, don't ever expect us to help you with Elliot again.

I let out a harsh, humorless laugh. Help me? They had just disqualified themselves from ever being in the same room as my son unsupervised.
I put the car in gear, drove to the designated pickup lot, and walked into the air-conditioned sanctuary of Guest Relations.
