Chapter 8 - A New HorizonThree months later, the legal storm had settled into a stark, undeniable new reality.

My parents and sister accepted a plea deal offered by the district attorney to avoid a high-profile public trial: misdemeanor child endangerment charges, mandatory parenting and anger management classes, fifty hours of community service, and a strict, court-ordered restraining order barring them from any contact with Elliot or myself for two years.
Kara’s husband had filed for divorce the week after the scandal broke, taking their children and moving out of state.
My apartment was quiet, but it was no longer heavy.
On a bright Saturday morning in May, Elliot and I stood outside a brand-new amusement park—a smaller, quieter adventure park known for its shaded gardens, gentle train rides, and stress-free atmosphere.
Elliot wore a bright blue cap with his name stitched on the front in bold yellow letters. He held my hand tightly, but his grip wasn't fearful; it was secure, trusting, and warm.
"Mom?" he asked, looking up as we walked through the turnstiles.
"Yes, buddy?"
"Are we going on the train first?"
I smiled, looking down at his bright, happy face, realizing with a profound wave of peace that we didn't need anyone else. We were safe. We were whole.

"The train first, the carousel second, and as much cotton candy as we want," I promised.
He grinned, pulling me forward into the sunshine, leaving the past entirely behind us where it belonged.
