At 6:15 p.m., my phone rang. It wasn't Denise or Kara. It was my uncle Greg—the one who had thought the family chat post was a joke.
"Clara?" His voice shook. "Clara, I just saw you on national television. Is... is all of that true? Did your father actually say that?"
"Every word, Uncle Greg," I said, watching the news anchor on my TV screen replaying clips of the interview. "Disney has the footage. The police have the report. They didn't just lose him; they left him behind because he needed to use the restroom."
Greg groaned, a sound of profound disgust. "My God. Your mother called me an hour ago screaming that you've ruined the family name. But... Clara, half the neighborhood is picketing outside their house right now. People are holding signs."
"Good," I said coldly.
The social consequences came thick and fast.
Kara’s school board campaign imploded within four hours. A petition demanding her immediate disqualification garnered over ten thousand signatures by midnight, citing a complete lack of moral judgment and empathy.
Ray was quietly asked by the board of directors at the local bank to take an "indefinite leave of absence" pending the outcome of the police investigation.
Denise found herself barred from her volunteer charity work, with the board president issuing a public statement condemning child abandonment in any form.
They had built their entire social standing on the illusion of being the "perfect, respectable Hayes family." And in less than twenty-four hours, my screenshots had burned that illusion to ash.
At 9:00 p.m., a car pulled up outside my apartment. Headlights swept across my living room wall.
Heavy, desperate knocks echoed through the hallway.
