Chapter 6 - The Midnight ConfessionThe storm outside the Lake Forest estate raged with a fury that mirrored the war room inside the third-floor study. Snow lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, turning the view of Lake Michigan into a chaotic blur of white.

Inside, the fire crackled, casting long, dancing shadows across Grant Calloway’s face.

"Tomorrow morning, at precisely nine o'clock, the annual board of directors meeting begins in the downtown tower," Grant said, his voice dropping into a rhythmic, calculated cadence. He traced the rim of an empty crystal glass with his index finger. "Vivian has spent the last six months cultivating relationships with three dissenting board members. Her goal is simple: declare me legally incapacitated, strip my voting rights, and assume full control of the Calloway Trust."

"And the poison?" I asked, standing near the edge of the mahogany desk, my arms crossed over my black uniform.

"The poison was her backup plan," Grant replied, his slate-gray eyes locking onto mine with chilling intensity. "Vivian is a predator, but she’s also arrogant. She believes no one—least of all a common housekeeper and a husband consumed by his empire—would ever dare to look behind her polished facade."

He stood up, walking slowly toward me until he was towering just inches away. The scent of sandalwood and winter air surrounded me.

"Which is why you played your part to perfection today," Grant continued softly, his hand reaching out to gently brush a stray lock of hair behind my ear. The touch was uncharacteristically tender, contrasting sharply with the steel in his voice. "You have more courage than anyone I’ve ever met, Nora. But from this moment on, the stakes are life and death. Are you ready to finish what we started?"

"I didn't come this far to back down, Mr. Calloway," I said, holding my ground. "For Lily and Noah... and for the truth."

A dark, approving smile touched Grant’s lips. "Then let’s spring the trap."
