Chapter 10 - The Empire We BuiltOne year later, the front-page headline of the Chicago Tribune read: THE CALLOWAY EMPIRE REDEFINED: FROM MERCILESS TYCOON TO PHILANTHROPIST OF THE YEAR.

The article detailed how Grant Calloway had transferred fifty percent of his voting shares into a newly established trust dedicated to child protection services and foster care reform across Illinois—a foundation spearheaded entirely by Nora Lane.

Inside the Lake Forest mansion, the evening air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming spring flowers and the sound of piano music drifting down from the west wing.

Lily, now eight years old and full of bright, unfiltered laughter, was playing a clumsy but joyful melody on the grand piano. Noah sat on the floor beside her, building an impossibly tall tower out of wooden blocks.

I stood in the arched doorway of the foyer, wearing a simple emerald-green dress, holding a tray of fresh lemonade.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me gently back against a solid, warm chest.

"You know," Grant murmured against my ear, his breath warm and steady, "the board of directors is meeting tomorrow morning. They want to vote on making you a permanent executive partner of Calloway Holdings."

I leaned back against him, smiling as I felt his lips brush softly against my temple.

"And what did you tell them?" I asked, turning slightly in his arms.

May you like

Grant smiled, his gray eyes twinkling with a rare, effortless joy as he looked past me at his laughing children, and then back down at the woman who had walked into his storm and refused to break.

"I told them," Grant whispered, tightening his embrace, "that some partnerships are built in boardrooms, and others are forged in fire. And that the most powerful person in Chicago doesn't own the skyline—she owns my heart."
