Chapter 10 - The New Blueprint

Three weeks later, the morning sun broke over the Chicago skyline, casting a golden glow across the newly renovated loading bays of Rowan Freight Holdings.

The transition had been brutal, swift, and absolute. Evan Cross was serving a life sentence in a maximum-security federal penitentiary with no chance of parole. Viktor Volkov’s shipping lanes had been seized by federal forfeiture laws, leaving the Bratva completely locked out of the Great Lakes shipping corridors.

And Gabriel Rowan?

Gabriel stood on the upper catwalk of Dock Terminal 4, watching the automated container cranes move massive steel boxes with quiet, efficient precision. The cash-heavy operations were gone, replaced by fully audited, transparent payroll systems that set a new standard for the entire Midwest logistics industry.

Footsteps approached behind him—light, familiar footsteps that didn't squeak.

Gabriel turned.

Hannah stood there, holding a clipboard, while beside her, eight-year-old Lucy wore a small, proud badge pinned to her jacket that read Junior Safety Inspector.

“Everything is running on time, Mr. Rowan,” Hannah said with a warm, genuine smile. “The morning audit is complete, and the board approved the new community scholarship fund without a single objection.”

Gabriel looked down at Lucy, who was holding a small brass key on a leather cord around her neck—the key with the chipped blue enamel dot.

“How are your grades, Inspector?” Gabriel asked with a rare, relaxed smile.

“All A’s,” Lucy said proudly. “And I checked every service corridor in this building this morning. Not a single squeak.”

Gabriel chuckled, a deep, resonant sound of a man who had finally cleared out the rats and reclaimed his house. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a small, polished silver compass, and handed it to the little girl.

“Good,” Gabriel said, looking out over the sparkling waters of Lake Michigan as the first cargo ship bearing the Rowan name sailed smoothly out toward the open horizon. “Because in this world, knowing which way is north is the only thing that keeps you alive.”
