Chapter 9 - The Final Ledger

Marcus Sterling scrambled to his feet, his hands trembling as he grabbed the edge of the table. “This is an outrage! You have no proof of—of anything! The board operates under independent oversight!”

Gabriel didn't yell. He didn't raise his voice by so much as a single decibel. He simply opened the black leather envelope, pulled out the eighteen pages of restructuring plans, and tossed them across the walnut table, scattering them among the startled executives.

“These eighteen pages,” Gabriel said quietly, “detail every single shell company, every offshore bank account, and every bribe paid to the municipal port authority over the last five years. Authored by Evan Cross. Approved in secret by a voting bloc holding forty-two percent of our voting shares.”

He locked his eyes onto Marcus Sterling.

“Your signature is on page twelve, Marcus.”

Diane Vance tried to reach for her briefcase, sliding her hand toward the clasp with microscopic slowness, but before her fingers could touch the leather, the boardroom doors opened again.

Two federal agents in tactical vests walked in, flanked not by local police, but by federal marshals holding heavy arrest warrants stamped by the Department of Justice.

“Marcus Sterling, Diane Vance,” the lead marshal announced, his voice echoing off the glass walls of the high-rise. “You are under arrest for racketeering, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit corporate espionage.”

Marcus looked wildly around the room, realizing in one horrifying second that his master plan hadn't just failed—it had been systematically dismantled, piece by piece, before he even had time to celebrate his victory.

“You can’t do this, Rowan!” Marcus screamed as the heavy steel cuffs were slapped onto his wrists. “Without us, the company goes under! Viktor will destroy everything you’ve built!”

Gabriel walked slowly around the table, stopping just inches from Marcus’s face.

“Viktor is currently trying to explain to a squad of federal anti-corruption agents why he’s trespassing in my private study with an illegal firearm,” Gabriel said softly. “And as for the company... I built it once from the dirt up. I can build it again.”

As the marshals hauled Marcus and Diane out of the boardroom, the remaining board members sat frozen, too terrified to even breathe, waiting for the axe to fall on their own heads.

Gabriel pulled out his chair, sat down at the head of the table, and opened his gold fountain pen.
