Chapter 1 - The Broken PromiseThe morning air on Wellington Street was thick with the scent of damp earth and exhaust fumes, but Samuel Andrews could only smell his own regret. Ten years earlier, he had stepped off this exact patch of cracked pavement with a one-way bus ticket to New York, carrying two canvas duffel bags and a burning desire to escape the crushing poverty that had swallowed his family whole.

He had promised his mother, Maria Andrews, that he would return as a savior. Instead, he returned as a phantom.
Clara Wilson’s words hung in the freezing morning air like shattered glass: “Your mother waited for you until she died.”
Samuel took a ragged step toward the peeling blue porch, his polished Italian leather shoes sinking slightly into the overgrown grass. "Clara, please," he choked out, his throat burning. "Tell me what happened. Maria never told me she was sick when she called me. She sounded... she sounded fine."
Clara gripped the wooden doorframe tighter, her knuckles turning bone-white. Her dark eyes flashed with a decade of accumulated pain, anger, and exhaustion. "Fine? Maria spent the last three years of her life sitting by that landline telephone every Sunday at six o'clock, watching the minute hand tick past seven, eight, nine o'clock, hoping her brilliant billionaire son would remember his roots. And when she stopped calling you, Samuel, her heart simply gave up."
The words struck Samuel with the physical force of a sledgehammer. He staggered backward, his chest tightening as memories of his mother’s tired, proud smile flashed behind his eyelids. He had traded her final years for quarterly earnings reports and luxury penthouses.

"I didn't know," Samuel whispered, tears burning the corners of his eyes. "I swear to God, Clara, I didn't know."
From behind the screen door, two small faces appeared. Emma and Lily peeked out, watching the exchange with wide, solemn eyes that broke Samuel’s soul.
