Chapter 3 - THE HIDDEN FOLDERSWith the perimeter completely locked down and the primary threat neutralized, the warehouse transformed into a makeshift forward operating base.

Field desks were quickly assembled by communications specialists, and glowing laptops illuminated the damp concrete interior with a pale blue glow. Sat-com antennas whirred softly as they beamed encrypted data streams back to Langley and the Pentagon.

Isaac stood over a folding aluminum table where several scattered legal documents and property deeds had been gathered from the floor where Hannah had been held captive. He flipped through the crisp pages with a critical, analytical eye, his finger tracing the dense legal jargon and fraudulent signatures.

"Sir," a tech specialist said, stepping up and handing Isaac a heavy tactical tablet. "We decrypted Gary Baxter's personal cloud storage and corporate server logs about three minutes ago. You're not going to believe what else these two were involved in."

Isaac took the tablet, his eyes scanning the digital manifests, offshore bank accounts, and shell corporation registries scrolling down the screen.

"It wasn't just Hannah's trust fund," Isaac murmured, his jaw tightening. "They were systematically liquidating properties across three different states using forged power-of-attorney documents signed by incapacitated or missing individuals."

"Worse than that, Colonel," the specialist replied, tapping the screen to pull up an encrypted video file. "Take a look at this surveillance footage recovered from Baxter's primary downtown office building. It was timestamped three days ago."

Isaac pressed play.

The grainy video showed Gary Baxter standing in a sleek, high-rise boardroom, speaking in hushed tones with an unfamiliar man wearing an expensive tailored suit and dark sunglasses. But it wasn't Gary's words that caught Isaac's attention—it was the logo embossed on the leather briefcase resting on the mahogany table between them.

It was the exact same crest that had appeared on a classified intelligence dossier Isaac had reviewed during his final operation overseas—a crest belonging to a high-level international syndicate known as the Vanguard Consortium, a criminal network specializing in corporate infiltration, political blackmail, and high-value asset acquisition.

"The Vanguard Consortium," Isaac said aloud, the pieces of a much larger, deadlier puzzle suddenly clicking into place in his mind. "Gary isn't just a corrupt corporate lawyer. He's a local front man for an international asset-stripping ring."

"That matches our preliminary data, sir," the specialist confirmed. "And check the recipient list on these financial wire transfers. Millions of dollars haven't just been moving between shell companies—they've been funneling directly into accounts controlled by a holding corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under a very specific name."

The specialist zoomed in on the beneficiary line of the latest transfer.

Isaac's eyes narrowed. The name listed as the ultimate beneficiary wasn't Gary Baxter.

It was Makayla Vance—Hannah’s mother.

The revelation hit Isaac like a physical blow. For years, he had believed Makayla was simply weak, easily manipulated by Gary’s arrogant charm and financial dominance. He had blamed himself for being away too much, for failing to keep his family together while he served his country.

He had thought she was a victim.

Instead, the digital logs proved something far more sinister: Makayla hadn't just been a bystander to Gary's crimes. She had been an active, willing co-conspirator from day one.
