Chapter 4 - THE BETRAYAL UNMASKEDTen minutes later, inside the heavily reinforced holding enclosure set up in the back of the mobile command unit parked on the street, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Gary Baxter was slumped in a steel chair, his hands cuffed securely behind his back, staring blankly at the floor. His arrogance had entirely evaporated, replaced by the hollow, vacant shock of a man who realized he had played a high-stakes poker game against a grandmaster and lost everything.
Sitting across the metal folding table from him was Makayla, her face stained with tears, trembling violently as two silent military guards stood like statues on either side of her.
The heavy steel door of the command unit slid open with a sharp clack.
Isaac stepped inside.
The temperature in the small room seemed to drop ten degrees the moment he entered. He didn't yell. He didn't slam his fists on the table. He simply walked over, placed the tactical tablet face-down on the metal surface, and stared directly at his ex-wife.
Makayla shrank back into her seat, unable to meet his gaze. Her lower lip quivered.
"I... I had no choice, Isaac," she whispered, her voice breaking into a ragged sob. "Gary said... he said if I didn't sign the papers, if I didn't help him secure Hannah's inheritance... his associates would ruin us. They would take everything we had!"
"Is that what you call it, Makayla?" Isaac’s voice was dangerously quiet, each word measured like the ticking of a time bomb. "You didn't just sign papers. You orchestrated the isolation of your own daughter. You helped them lock her in a shed, forge medical records, and strip away her future—all to pad accounts in the Cayman Islands registered under your maiden name."
Gary lifted his head slowly, a bitter, pathetic chuckle escaping his bruised lips.
"You think you're so righteous, don't you, Colonel?" Gary spat, his eyes flashing with sudden malice. "You think because you wear a uniform and carry a flag, you're better than everyone else? You were never there! You abandoned your family for years chasing ghosts in foreign countries! Makayla and I built a life while you were out playing God with other people's lives!"
Isaac didn't flinch. He leaned forward, placing both hands flat on the metal table, bringing his face inches from Gary's.
"I was out there making sure monsters like you didn't have the freedom to destroy homes like mine," Isaac said, his voice dropping to a low, chilling register. "And the moment I came home, the very first thing I heard was my daughter crying for help from a dark room you built for her."
Isaac straightened up, turning his attention back to Makayla. The look in his eyes wasn't anger anymore—it was a profound, chilling disappointment.
"You traded your own flesh and blood for offshore accounts and a comfortable suburban lie," Isaac said softly. "The military taught me how to identify the enemy, Makayla. But the hardest lesson I ever had to learn is that sometimes, the enemy doesn't wear a uniform... they sleep in the bed next to you."
Makayla buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with uncontrolled weeping as she realized that no amount of tears, excuses, or manipulation could ever undo what she had done.
Just then, the communications specialist popped his head into the command unit, holding a high-frequency radio receiver.
"Colonel Vance," the specialist reported sharply. "We've intercepted an outgoing encrypted transmission from a burner phone hidden in Gary's jacket pocket. It was routed directly to an international satellite frequency linked to the Vanguard Consortium's primary European node."
Isaac turned his gaze back to Gary, whose face had suddenly turned deathly pale.
"Oh?" Isaac raised an eyebrow, a cold smile forming on his lips. "And what did the message say?"

The specialist looked down at his terminal tablet, reading the decoded text aloud:
"Asset compromised. Vance is on-site. Activate Protocol Zero."
