Chapter 5 - PROTOCOL ZEROThe words hung in the cramped metal interior of the command unit like an active grenade waiting for the pin to be pulled.

Protocol Zero.

Even among special operations veterans, the phrase carried a terrifying weight. It wasn't just a contingency plan; it was a total-destruction protocol used by shadow syndicates to erase compromised assets, silence witnesses, and cover up multi-million-dollar criminal enterprises through any means necessary—including orbital reconnaissance strikes, synchronized structural demolitions, or targeted elimination squads.

Isaac didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second.

"Get everyone off the street," Isaac commanded, his voice shifting instantly into high-threat operational mode. "Move the mobile command unit three hundred yards north behind the reinforced berm. Evacuate Hannah and the medical team to the secondary staging zone immediately."

"Sir, what about the suspects?" the specialist asked, glancing nervously at Gary and Makayla.

"Keep them secured in the armored transport," Isaac ordered sharply. "They're still our primary leverage against the Consortium. Move!"

Within seconds, the entire neighborhood block transformed into a blur of coordinated tactical motion. Armored humvees reversed into defensive positions, tactical operators sprinted to designated cover points, and the transport vehicles carrying Hannah and the prisoners roared away toward the safety of the perimeter line.

Only Isaac remained behind near the mouth of the warehouse, his eyes scanning the tree line at the edge of the quiet suburban cul-de-sac.

A profound, unnatural silence fell over the neighborhood. The cicadas stopped chirping. The distant hum of highway traffic seemed to vanish entirely.

It was the signature tactical quiet that always preceded an ambush.

"Colonel Vance," a voice crackled sharply through the comms earpiece wired into Isaac's tactical rig. It was the Sergeant Major stationed at the northern perimeter ridge. "We've picked up multiple high-speed thermal signatures moving through the wooded ravine behind the property. At least six unidentifiable combatants. Armed with heavy assault platforms and thermal optics. They're bypassing local law enforcement checkpoints completely."

"Professional operators," Isaac murmured, resting his hand casually on the grip of his sidearm. "They didn't send local thugs this time. They sent the cleaners."

"Do we have clearance to engage with heavy air support, sir?" the Sergeant Major asked over the static.

"Negative," Isaac replied smoothly, his eyes locked on a shadow flickering across a second-story rooftop across the street. "If we light up a residential neighborhood with gunships, the Consortium wins the PR war before the dust even settles. This is a closed fight."

"Copy that, Colonel. We're moving to flank their left side. You won't be alone for long."

"Negative, Sergeant Major. Hold your position until my signal. Let them think I'm isolated."

Before the operator on the other end could argue, Isaac clicked his comms off, stepped out from the shelter of the warehouse doorway, and walked slowly into the middle of the open gravel driveway.

He stood entirely alone under the pale moonlight, a solitary soldier waiting for the storm to break.
