Chapter 10 - A New ChapterSix months later, the pale oak headboard on Maple Street had been replaced with a custom walnut frame, and the thin fracture in the ceiling was completely repaired—fixed by a professional contractor hired and paid for entirely by Claire.

Claire sat on her front porch during a crisp autumn evening, holding a steaming mug of tea. She had recently been promoted to Director of Emergency Medical Operations for the entire county health network, a role that demanded every ounce of her leadership and strength.

Her phone chimed. It was an unknown number, sending a single text message: “Claire, please. I’m living out of my car. Can we just talk? I made a mistake.”

Claire stared at the screen for three long seconds. The old Claire—the woman who believed that keeping the peace made her mature—might have felt a twinge of guilt. But the woman she was now, steeled by betrayal and liberated by her own unyielding strength, simply tapped two buttons.
