Chapter 2 - The Green Folder and the Inheritance

Claire did not drop her gaze as Lorraine stormed out of the bedroom, muttering threats about calling Andrew to report her insubordination. The heavy iron pot remained on the pale oak floor, a permanent scar on a room that was supposed to be a sanctuary. Claire walked to the bathroom, washed her face with cold water, and looked at her reflection. Thirty-two years old. A senior paramedic who spent her life stabilizing strangers while her own life was bleeding out behind closed doors.

She opened the green folder on the kitchen table. Inside were documents Andrew had long since forgotten she kept. When they purchased the house five years into their marriage, Andrew’s credit had been temporarily ruined by a failed business venture. Claire had used her inheritance—left to her by her grandfather—to pay the entire down payment and cover the closing costs. Furthermore, because her name was the sole legal entity on the mortgage and deed for the first three years, and because subsequent major renovations were entirely funded by her personal bank transfers, the legal reality was stark: Andrew owned virtually nothing. The signed statement in her hand was an agreement Andrew had drafted during a brief moment of marital panic years ago, acknowledging her sole financial contribution to the property. He had signed it, thinking it a romantic gesture; it was actually an ironclad financial anchor.

Her phone buzzed. It was a text message from a local courier service, notifying her that a priority package had been dropped off at the community health center’s front desk, addressed specifically to her home name and marked Urgent / Confidential.
