Chapter 2 - The Emergency Boardroom

At 8:00 AM, the emergency Zoom call commenced.
The screens of eight senior partners blinked to life. Normally, these quarterly check-ins were filled with quiet confidence, polite nods, and discussions of high-growth valuations. Today, the virtual boardroom was an abyss of palpable anxiety. Word of the police presence at my penthouse had already leaked through a local police scanner feed, and the financial press was beginning to catch wind that Sterling Point Capital’s flagship managing partner had experienced a dramatic, headline-grabbing domestic incident.
I didn't wait for them to ask. I pulled up the live screen share.
"Good morning, everyone," I said, my voice cutting through the digital silence like a scalpel. My tone was calm, completely devoid of the terror that had gripped me moments before. "Before the tech blogs start speculating about my personal life, I am calling this emergency session to address a massive security breach and corporate sabotage attempt."
Marcus Vance, our eldest senior partner and a man whose skepticism was legendary, leaned forward, narrowing his eyes. "Olivia, we’ve been getting alerts from our compliance software. The Series B reserve fund—the seventy-million tranche—has a pending transfer flag attached to an unverified Cayman entity. What in God's name is going on?"
"That transfer was authorized fraudulently using a forged digital signature," I stated cleanly, pulling up Grace’s forensic accounting report on the main screen. "The perpetrator is my ex-husband, Brandon Hawthorne, acting in collusion with an external financial syndicate. He attempted to siphon our capital reserves and plant evidence framing me for internal embezzlement."
A murmur rippled through the grid of faces. Some partners looked horrified; others looked deeply suspicious.
"Framed?" Marcus repeated, his voice sharp. "Olivia, seventy million dollars doesn't just walk out of a venture capital firm because of a spousal dispute. Where is the money right now?"
"It's sitting in a frozen escrow account courtesy of an emergency injunction Grace Parker filed thirty minutes ago," I replied, flashing the court-stamped document across the screen. "And thanks to the live security footage recorded during his illegal break-in at my home this morning—which is currently sitting in the hands of the District Attorney—we have him dead to rights on felony burglary, identity theft, and corporate espionage."

I paused, letting the heavy weight of the evidence sink into their minds.
"He thought he could destroy me, take our capital, and leave me holding the bag for a federal indictment," I said, my eyes locking onto Marcus’s camera lens. "Instead, he walked straight into a trap. Now, we have forty-eight hours to hunt down every single accomplice in his syndicate, pull back every cent of that capital, and dismantle Brandon Hawthorne’s entire world before he even realizes his cell door has locked."
