Chapter 7 - The Ghost of Apex Global

I didn't panic. Panic was for amateurs, and I had just dismantled an international conspiracy before breakfast two weeks prior.
Instead, I locked my terminal, grabbed my encrypted tablet, and bypassed the elevators, taking the private emergency stairwell down to the sub-basement archive room where our physical historical records were stored.
Sterling Point Capital’s physical vault required dual-factor biometric authentication—my retina scan and a physical brass key that never left my person.
The heavy steel door swung open with a pneumatic hiss. Row upon row of climate-controlled steel cabinets stretched out into the dim fluorescent light. I walked straight to Section 14: Legacy Estates & Pre-Merger Acquisitions.
I pulled out the physical file labeled Apex Global Holdings – 2021 Restructuring.
Inside, the pages were pristine, untouched by digital tampering. I laid them out on the stainless steel consultation table and began cross-referencing the signatures on the original acquisition deeds.
There was my father’s signature. There was the signature of Arthur Sterling, our firm's founder who had passed away years ago.
And right beneath them, tucked into a secondary rider clause, was a signature I hadn't noticed when I first skimmed the file as a junior associate:
Julian Vance.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
Julian wasn't just a random corporate raider. He was Arthur Sterling’s former protégé—the man who had been legally barred from the firm a decade ago for attempting a hostile buyout of my father’s estate.
And Brandon? Brandon hadn't just been a gold-digging husband manipulated by Julian. Brandon was Julian’s biological nephew. Their familial relationship had been scrubbed from every public record using an elite privacy scrubber service.
They hadn't just tried to steal seventy million dollars.
They had tried to finish what they started five years ago: complete control of my family's entire legacy, our patents, and our controlling shares in Sterling Point Capital.

Suddenly, the sensor lights in the sub-basement clicked off.
The heavy steel vault door began to swing slowly shut.
