Chapter 5 - The Corporate Counter-Strike

Three days later, the storm had broken, and the fallout was reshaping the venture capital landscape.
Sterling Point Capital’s conference room was packed to capacity. Not just with our eight senior partners, but with representatives from the Securities and Exchange Commission, federal cybercrime investigators, and leading tech journalists who had been briefed on the attempted corporate heist.
Marcus Vance stood at the head of the conference table, projecting a massive network diagram onto the digital screen. The diagram mapped out Julian Vance’s entire underground syndicate, complete with shell companies, offshore accounts, and wire transfer logs.
"Thanks to the swift forensic accounting of Grace Parker and the uncompromised digital security maintained by Managing Partner Olivia Vance," Marcus announced, his voice carrying absolute authority, "the seventy-million-dollar Series B reserve has been 100 percent recovered. Furthermore, federal authorities have intercepted Julian Vance’s assets in the Caymans, freezing over two hundred million dollars in illicitly laundered funds."
A wave of applause swept through the room.
I sat quietly near the center of the table, sipping my coffee, watching the media flashbulbs pop outside the glass partitions. My name was already trending globally on social media—not as the victim of a messy divorce, but as the ruthless, brilliant tech titan who single-handedly dismantled an international white-collar crime ring from her home office while her ex-husband tried to break down her door.
The doors swung open, and Grace walked in, sliding a sleek leather folder in front of me.
"The final filings are complete," she whispered with a triumphant smile. "Brandon’s defense counsel has officially dropped any pretense of contesting the charges. Without Julian’s backing, he’s facing twenty-five years on federal wire fraud and conspiracy counts alone. And Margaret? She’s facing accessory charges for helping him coordinate the fraudulent identity transfers."
"And the civil restitution?" I asked.
"Every single luxury item, vehicle, and property purchased with siphoned corporate funds has been seized and liquidated," Grace replied. "They are legally bankrupt. Stripped to zero."
I nodded slowly, looking out the panoramic windows toward the sprawling Manhattan skyline. The chapter of my life involving Brandon Hawthorne was officially closed, burned to ash, and buried beneath an avalanche of federal law. But as I looked at the glowing ticker tape of our portfolio companies thriving below, I realized something profound.
