Chapter 2 - THE PAPER TRAIL OF TRAITOROUS GREEDTwenty-four hours later, I was discharged from the hospital under high-priority military escort.

I didn't go back to the suburban house Grant had locked me out of. Instead, a blacked-out SUV took me and baby Maya directly to a secured estate in Middleburg, Virginia—a sprawling, gated fortress that had belonged to my grandfather Everett.

Sitting in the mahogany-paneled study surrounded by legal advisors and military intelligence officers, the true depth of Grant’s betrayal began to unspool.

"It’s worse than simple infidelity, Colonel," reported Major Sarah Lin, my long-time intelligence aide. She placed a thick stack of financial audits on the antique desk. "Grant didn't just cheat on you. He was actively bankrupting you to build an empire for Chloe Vance."

I held Maya against my chest, feeling her steady breathing while I skimmed the documents.

For the past two years, while I was deployed on covert assignments, Grant had systematically forged my signature on secondary loans, remortgaged the house, and siphoned capital from a shell logistics company my grandfather had set up to funnel my military trust funds.

"How much did he steal?" I asked, my voice calm, controlled, and deadly.

"Directly from your personal accounts? Roughly $1.4 million," Major Lin replied. "He used $400,000 of it to buy Chloe Vance’s ring and finance her failing luxury event management firm. The rest he put into a speculative off-shore real estate venture in Dubai."

"And the grand total of the trust?"

"Untouched," my lead estate attorney, Arthur Pendelton, interjected with a smug grin. "Your grandfather was too smart for a common crook like Grant Mercer. Everett locked the $20 million behind a biometric, multi-signature military trust. It required your physical presence and your active duty security clearance to unlock. Grant was playing with pennies while sitting on top of a gold mine he could never touch."

"Where is Grant now?"

"His uncle, Richard Mercer, paid his $250,000 bail," Lin answered. "Richard Mercer is the CEO of Mercer Global Defense—a mid-tier military contractor currently bidding on a $500 million logistics contract with the Department of Defense."

I looked up from the papers, a cold smile forming on my lips.

Richard Mercer was a powerful man in D.C. circles. He was arrogant, ruthless, and had spent years treating me like a low-class nobody who wasn't good enough for his nephew. He believed Grant was the golden boy of the family, destined to take over Mercer Global Defense.

"Richard thinks he can pull political strings to make Grant's federal charges disappear," Lin added. "They’re preparing to file an emergency suit in family court tomorrow morning to demand full custody of Maya and temporary management of your assets, claiming you are mentally unfit due to combat-related PTSD."

I set my teacup down with a quiet clink.

"They want a war?" I whispered, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the misty Virginia hills. "They have no idea who they’re fighting."
