Chapter 7 - THE FINAL JUDGMENTThree months later.

The United States Federal District Court in Alexandria, Virginia, was packed to maximum capacity. Journalists, military brass, and high-society observers filled every bench.

Grant Mercer stood at the defense table wearing a orange prison jumpsuit. His hair was messy, his face sunken, and his former arrogance completely drained. Beside him sat his uncle, Richard Mercer, also wearing an orange jumpsuit, waiting for his own sentencing on corporate espionage and government fraud.

Justice Evelyn Thorne adjusted her glasses and looked down at the court documents.

"Mr. Grant Mercer," Judge Thorne began, her voice echoing in the solemn courtroom. "Over the past six months, this court has reviewed evidence detailing a pattern of financial theft, corporate sabotage, spousal abuse, and reckless endangerment of human life that is frankly sickening."

Grant kept his head bowed, tears silently dropping onto the wooden table.

"You abandoned a woman in active labor—a decorated officer of the United States Military—left her to bleed on a driveway, stole her money to buy luxury items for your mistress, and actively conspired to sell military logistics data for personal profit," Judge Thorne continued. "You have displayed a complete absence of human empathy, morals, or honor."

Judge Thorne slammed her hand onto the desk.

"On the charges of Interstate Grand Larceny, Criminal Treason, Fraud, and Reckless Endangerment, I sentence you to twenty-eight years in federal maximum-security prison, with zero possibility of parole for the first twenty years."

A loud gasp rippled through the courtroom gallery. Grant collapsed back into his chair, sobbing uncontrollably.

"Furthermore," Judge Thorne added, "your parental rights are permanently severed. You will have no access to, communication with, or legal standing over Maya Everett Langley for the remainder of your life."

I sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in a sharp civilian suit, holding Maya in my arms. Beside me, General Vance nodded in grim satisfaction.

As the bailiffs stepped forward to drag Grant away to serve his nearly three-decade sentence, he turned his head toward me one last time.

His eyes met mine, filled with absolute, overwhelming regret. He realized that in his blind pursuit of fake luxury and temporary power, he had thrown away a loving wife, a beautiful daughter, a $20 million fortune, and his own freedom.

I didn't glare at him. I didn't smile. I simply adjusted Maya’s blanket, stood up, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sun without looking back.
