Chapter 4 - THE CORPORATE TAKEOVERGrant thought losing custody of Maya was the lowest point of his life. He was wrong. It was merely the preamble.

Three days later, the board of directors for Mercer Global Defense convened an emergency session at their headquarters in Tysons Corner, Virginia.
Richard Mercer sat at the head of the mahogany conference table, attempting to regain control of the room. "Look, the situation with my nephew is a personal matter! It has zero bearing on our contract with the Department of Defense. We are days away from securing the $500 million logistics deal. We cannot let media gossip derail us!"
"It isn't gossip, Uncle Richard," a voice echoed from the doorway.
The double doors swung open. I walked into the board room, flanked by General Marcus Vance and two representatives from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Richard stood up, knocking his chair back. "What is the meaning of this?! This is a private corporate meeting! Security, throw this woman out!"
"The security team answers to the military oversight committee now, Mr. Mercer," General Vance said, placing a heavy document on the center table. "As of 0800 hours today, the Department of Defense has placed Mercer Global Defense under strategic review due to national security breaches."
"Security breaches? That's absurd!" Richard shouted.
"Is it?" I asked, pulling up a seat at the foot of the table and sitting down with supreme calm. "Two years ago, your nephew Grant illegally used my classified military credentials to bypass security firewalls on your company’s logistics servers. He extracted classified shipping routes and sold them through shell corporations to pad your company's revenue margins."
The board members turned to look at Richard in absolute horror. Whispers erupted around the room.
"That's a lie!" Richard sneered, though sweat was beginning to bead along his hairline. "You have no proof!"
"We have Grant’s laptop," I replied with a subtle smile. "The one he left sitting open on the kitchen table the night he threw me out of the house. Did you really think I didn't back up his hard drive before the police seized it?"
Richard froze. He turned his head slowly toward Grant, who was sitting in the corner of the room, looking pale and miserable.
"You idiot..." Richard breathed, his voice trembling with pure hatred. "You brought a government probe into my company?"
"I didn't just bring a probe, Richard," I said, leaning forward. "I bought your debt. My grandfather’s trust owned $30 million of Mercer Global Defense’s high-yield corporate bonds. Ten minutes ago, due to the breach of military compliance clauses, I defaulted those bonds."
I stood up, resting my hands on the polished wood.
"I am now the majority debt-holder of Mercer Global Defense. And my first act as owner is to terminate Richard Mercer as CEO, liquidate your personal shares to satisfy outstanding government fines, and barred both you and Grant Mercer from ever stepping foot on a military installation again."
"You ruined me!" Richard screamed, lunging across the table.

Before he could reach me, two federal marshals stepped in, grabbing Richard by the arms and forcing him back to the ground.
Grant sat paralyzed in his chair, watching his wealthy, powerful family empire crumble into dust in less than ten minutes—all because he thought his pregnant wife was "dead weight."
