Chapter 3 - The Secret Clause

“A Dead Man’s Will Is a Contract Written in Blood.”Three days after the funeral, the reality of her new life began to set in. Camila sat in the grand study of her parents' colonial home, surrounded by leather-bound books and the faint aroma of her father’s favorite tobacco, which still clung to the curtains.

On the desk lay the official valuation of the estate: 25.8 million Mexican pesos ($1.3 million USD). It was a fortune that could guarantee her safety and comfort for the rest of her life.

But she couldn't enjoy a single peso of it.

The door to the study opened, and Mr. Garza entered, holding a stack of legal documents. His face looked incredibly grave.

"Did he get out?" Camila asked, her heart tightening.

Mr. Garza sighed, sitting down across from her. "Yes. Alejandro’s family has deep connections. His uncle is a corrupt city magistrate. They managed to secure his release on a ridiculously low bail under the pretense of 'insufficient evidence of physical trauma,' claiming your injured lip was an accident. He is free, Camila. And he has already filed a counter-suit."

"On what grounds?!" Camila stood up, her hands clenching into fists. "He broke into my house! He assaulted me on camera!"

"He is claiming that the video was heavily edited and that you attacked him first, causing severe nerve damage to his wrist with that crystal sculpture," Mr. Garza explained. "Furthermore, his lawyers have filed a petition to freeze your parents' estate. Under a technicality in the civil code, because you are still legally married, he is claiming that he is entitled to 'spousal maintenance' due to his physical injury preventing him from working."

Camila sank back into her chair, feeling a sickening wave of dread. "He wants to starve me out. He knows I can't afford a prolonged legal battle if my accounts are frozen."

"He does," Mr. Garza agreed. "But your father anticipated this. There is a secret clause in the trust—a codicil that Alberto made me swear to keep hidden until the absolute worst-case scenario."

Mr. Garza pulled a sealed wax envelope from his briefcase. He broke the seal and handed the document to Camila.

"Your father knew Alejandro was embezzling money from his own logistics firm," Mr. Garza whispered. "And he knew Alejandro was using your marriage to shield his illicit funds. This clause dictates that the entire $25 million inheritance will remain locked in an offshore account, completely untouchable by any court order, unless one of two conditions is met."

"What are the conditions?" Camila asked desperately.

Condition 1: A final, legally binding divorce decree is issued, proving Alejandro has no marital claims.

Condition 2: Alejandro is convicted of a felony carrying a prison sentence of five years or more, which automatically voids his marital rights under the Mendoza family trust's morality clause.

"If neither condition is met within six months," Mr. Garza said solemnly, "the entire estate is automatically donated to a global charity, leaving both you and Alejandro with absolutely nothing."

Camila stared at the paper. Her father hadn't just protected the money; he had set a ticking time bomb. He was forcing her to fight. He was forcing her to finally crush Alejandro once and for all.

Suddenly, Camila’s phone buzzed on the desk. It was an unknown number.

She answered, putting it on speaker.

"Do you like the cold, Camila?" Alejandro's mocking voice sneered through the receiver. "Because by next week, I’m going to have the utility companies shut off the power to that big, empty house. You won't have a single peso to buy food. I'm going to make you crawl back to me on your knees, begging me to sign the divorce papers. And when you do, I'm taking 90% of everything."

Camila gripped the edge of the desk, her knuckles turning white. But she didn't cry. She didn't freeze.

"You think you've won, Alejandro?" she said, her voice incredibly calm. "You don't even know what game we are playing."

"Oh, really?" Alejandro laughed. "And what are you going to do? You're a nobody without your parents. You're just a weak, pathetic little girl."

"We'll see about that," Camila said, and hung up.

She looked up at Mr. Garza. "He has a weakness. It isn't his pride, and it isn't his anger."

"What is it?" Mr. Garza asked.

"It's Paola," Camila smiled coldly. "Greed brought them together. And greed will tear them apart."
