Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Within the Betrayal

“There Is No Honor Among Thieves, Especially When $25 Million Is on the Line.”The upscale cafe in the Polanco neighborhood was buzzing with the chatter of wealthy socialites. Paola sat at a corner table, sipping an expensive latte, her eyes constantly darting to her phone. Alejandro had been screaming at his lawyers all morning, his face swollen with stress and his wrist wrapped in a heavy splint. He was losing his mind, and more importantly, he was running out of money.

Suddenly, a shadow fell over her table.

Paola looked up, her breath catching in her throat.

Camila stood there, dressed in a stunning, tailored emerald-green suit. She looked radiant, powerful, and completely transformed from the broken widow Paola had seen just nights before.

"Can I sit?" Camila asked, not waiting for an answer as she slid into the chair opposite her husband's mistress.

"What are you doing here?" Paola hissed, looking around nervously. "If Alejandro finds out—"

"Alejandro is a sinking ship, Paola. And you aren't the type of woman who drowns for a man."

Camila placed a sleek designer tablet on the table and slid it toward Paola. On the screen was a bank statement showing a balance of 5 million pesos ($250,000 USD) in a private, readily accessible account.

"What is this?" Paola gasped, her eyes locking onto the numbers.

"This is your ticket out," Camila said softly. "I know Alejandro's financial situation. I know his logistics company is on the verge of bankruptcy. I know he owes millions to dangerous people, and he was counting on my parents' inheritance to pay off his debts. If he doesn't get my money, those people will kill him. And if you stay with him, you'll go down as his accomplice."

Paola swallowed hard, her gaze shifting between the bank statement and Camila's cold, calculated expression. "What do you want?"

"I want his laptop," Camila said. "The black ThinkPad he keeps in his private study at your apartment. The one where he keeps the dual accounting ledgers for his logistics company. I know he’s been laundering money for local politicians. Give me the password and the hard drive."

"He'll kill me!" Paola whispered, her face pale.

"He won't have the chance," Camila countered. "With that evidence, the federal police will arrest him for financial fraud and money laundering. He will be facing fifteen years in a federal penitentiary. Under my father's trust, a felony conviction of that scale instantly dissolves our marriage and unlocks my entire inheritance."

Camila leaned closer, her voice a sharp whisper. "You help me put him away, and the moment he is convicted, I will transfer those 5 million pesos directly to an offshore account in your name. You can leave Mexico, start a new life in Spain or Miami, and never have to look back. Or... you can stay with a violent, bankrupt abuser who will eventually blame you for everything."

Paola’s mind raced. She had never loved Alejandro; she had loved his money, his expensive gifts, and the lifestyle he promised. Now, that lifestyle was a burning house, and Camila was offering her a golden fire escape.

"He... he keeps the laptop in a floor safe behind the painting in his study," Paola stammered, her voice barely audible. "The code is his mother's birthday. 14-02-65. But you have to promise me, Camila... you have to promise me I won't go to jail."

"Get me the hard drive tonight," Camila said, rising from her seat and taking her tablet back. "And you'll get your money. Double-cross me, Paola, and I will make sure you share a cell with him."

As Camila walked out of the cafe, she felt a powerful rush of adrenaline. For seven years, she had been the victim.

Now, she was the director of her own play.
