CHAPTER 9 — The Enemy Behind Every Betrayal

Smoke drifted through the underground vault.
Emergency lights flashed red.
Security doors slammed shut automatically.
Elena and Sophia took cover behind rows of reinforced storage cases.
Outside, waves crashed against the steel structure.
There was nowhere to run.
Only one exit remained.
Someone slowly walked through the smoke.
Perfectly calm.
Perfectly dressed.
A woman.
Perhaps sixty years old.
Silver hair.
Black gloves.
An expression completely free of emotion.
Every armed operative lowered their weapons as she approached.
Even Michael stepped aside.
"Chairwoman..."
one of them whispered.
The woman looked at Elena with quiet curiosity.
"So..."
"You are Victor Hale's daughter."
Elena's heart skipped a beat.
"My father?"
The woman smiled faintly.
"He founded Black Horizon."
The words struck harder than any bullet.
"No."
"You're lying."
"I wish I were."
The woman opened an old leather folder.
Inside were photographs.
Elena as a child.
Her parents.
Damian.
Michael.
Every major event of the past twenty years.
Watched.
Recorded.
Planned.
"Nothing happened by accident," the Chairwoman said.
"Not your marriage."
"Not Damian's promotion."
"Not Michael's disappearance."
"Not even today's meeting."
Damian suddenly spoke from the doorway.
He had followed Elena despite government restrictions.
His hands were raised.
"No more lies."
The Chairwoman laughed softly.
"You still believe you ever had a choice."
She turned toward Elena.
"We never wanted Damian."
"We were always preparing you."
The room fell silent.
Michael lowered his weapon.
Sophia stared at him in disbelief.
Elena could barely speak.
"Preparing me... for what?"
The Chairwoman took one final step forward.
"To become my successor."
Before anyone could react...
Every monitor inside the vault activated simultaneously.
A countdown appeared.
09:59... 09:58... 09:57...
Self-destruct protocol.
The vault began to shake violently.
The Chairwoman smiled.
"Now, Elena..."
"Show me whether you're worthy."
The doors locked.
The countdown continued.

And for the first time...
Every enemy in the room realized they might all die together.
