Chapter 2 - The Billionaire's Ultimatum

⚡ “SHE STAYS, OR THE FUNDING LEAVES.” THE SHOCKING ULTIMATUM THAT SHATTERED MANHATTAN’S ELITE!The double doors of the Grand Belmore ballroom swung open, and a collective hush fell over the five hundred guests. Expecting the grand re-entry of the billionaire benefactor, Marcus Cole, they instead witnessed a sight that defied all logic.

Marcus was walking down the center aisle, but he wasn't alone. Holding his right hand was a tiny girl in a wrinkled, cheap cotton dress, clutching a battered stuffed toy. Walking a step behind them, looking as though she were walking toward a firing squad, was a catering server in a plain black-and-white uniform.

At the main table, the bride, Vanessa Whitcomb—now Vanessa Sterling—stood up so fast she knocked over her glass of vintage champagne. The dark liquid pooled onto the pristine Italian lace tablecloth.

"Marcus!" Vanessa cried out, her voice echoing through the silent room. "What is the meaning of this? Who are these people?"

Her new husband, Julian Sterling, a man whose trust fund was heavily dependent on Marcus’s venture capital firm, rushed forward, his face pale. "Uncle Marcus, please. If this is a joke, or some kind of eccentric performance art..."

Marcus led Lily directly to the elevated stage where the fifty-piece orchestra stood frozen. He took the wireless microphone from the conductor’s stand and turned to face the crowd. The wealthiest families in New York stared back at him in stunned, judgmental silence. Diamond bracelets rattled as women covered their mouths; men whispered furiously behind their programs.

"Ten minutes ago," Marcus’s voice boomed through the high-end audio system, "I was told that this wedding represented the pinnacle of culture, elegance, and high society. But while you were all drinking champagne that costs more than a family's monthly rent, I heard something truly beautiful hidden behind a garbage door."

Claudia Whitcomb strode into the ballroom, her heels clicking violently against the marble. "Marcus, stop this madness! You are humiliating our family! Security, remove that woman and her child immediately!"

Two burly security guards in dark suits moved toward Rosa. Instantly, Rosa stepped back, her instincts screaming at her to protect Lily. She reached for her daughter, ready to run out into the cold night and accept her fate as an unemployed, blacklisted single mother.

"Touch them," Marcus said into the microphone, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper that reverberated through the speakers, "and I pull every single dollar of funding from the Sterling-Whitcomb merger before the banks open tomorrow morning."

Julian Sterling froze. He grabbed the security guards by their arms, his voice cracking with panic. "Wait! Don't touch them! Stand down!" He turned to his new bride’s aunt, his eyes wide with terror. "Aunt Claudia, shut up! Sit down!"

"What did you say to me?" Claudia gasped, insulted.

"He told you to sit down, Claudia," Marcus stated coldly. He turned his attention back to Lily, crouching down so they were eye-to-eye once again. The microphone captured the gentle warmth of his breath. "Lily, do you remember the song you were singing to Bun Bun? The one about the stars over the river?"

Lily looked out at the sea of hostile, wealthy faces. She saw the glittering diamonds, the harsh glares of Vanessa and Claudia, and the desperate, terrified face of her mother. But then she looked at Marcus, who was smiling at her with an expression of profound, protective gentleness.

"I remember," Lily whispered into the microphone.

"Sing it for them," Marcus encouraged softly. "Sing it, and don't look at anyone but your mama."

Rosa stepped to the edge of the stage, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes. She forced a brave, trembling smile for her daughter. Lily took a deep breath, her tiny chest rising, and opened her mouth.
